Tasting notes Our Hands by Jesús Mendoza 2024
Red wine Aged in wood. 12 meses en barricas de roble.
Our Hands by Jesús Mendoza 2024 is a wine that captivates from the outset with its enchanting complexity. On the nose, its aromas envelop you with refined notes of cranberry, plum, and red currant, transporting you to a stroll through a fruit-laden forest. Upon tasting, it reveals firm tannins that provide structure, accompanied by a vibrant acidity that refreshes the palate. Additionally, a subtle mineral reduction timidly emerges, enhancing its earthy and stony undertones. Undoubtedly, this wine is a gem for those seeking an immersive and detailed tasting experience, with a touch of earthly sophistication.

About Our Hands by Jesús Mendoza
In the world of wine, there are names that carry more weight for what they convey than for their scores. Among them is Tim Atkin, a critic who annually traverses regions such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, or South Africa with the patience of someone who understands that the key is not just to find good wines, but to discover those not yet in the spotlight.
His reports are not merely a simple guide of scores. They are more akin to a snapshot of a region's current state, nuanced, with extensive analyses and, occasionally, with subtle surprises. One such moment occurs when he announces his "Red Wine Discovery of the Year." This is where things truly shift, as it is not about the best or most famous wine of the year, but something more intriguing: the wine that was under the radar and suddenly becomes the centre of attention.
In the Rioja 2025 report, that spotlight was claimed by Our Hands. This is the personal project of Jesús Mendoza, the winemaker at Remírez de Ganuza, an individual with experience and a solid track record within one of the most esteemed wineries in the area, but who here chooses to speak in the first person.
Behind it lies old vineyards, five hectares in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the heart of the Rioja Sonsierra. Plots named El Bombón and El Rayo, with tempranillo vines and other red varieties over half a century old, thriving in stony soils, a mix of limestone, sandstone, and quartzite. It's a landscape that offers nothing for free but, when expressed, does so with a very distinct identity.
The winemaking follows the same logic of restraint. Manual harvesting, careful selection, gentle destemming, gravity-fed processes, cold maceration, and fermentations with indigenous yeasts. Everything is designed so that the wine is not constructed over the vineyard, but from it. Even the extraction is measured, not aiming for power, but texture.
The result is Our Hands, a wine that fits into that category which can sometimes be more perilous than that of the great icons: the discoveries. Because there is no prior expectation here, but a clear consequence. If a critic like Atkin highlights it, the movement begins. First among professionals, then among importers, and subsequently among those who are one step ahead of the market.
And in wines of limited production, that journey is often swift...
