About Kumeu River Cremant
If anyone deserves recognition for the current status and reputation of New Zealand wine (which exports 90% of its production), it is the Croatian people. More precisely, these settlers, known locally as Dalmatians (a Croatian region on the Adriatic coast), were among those who developed the winemaking tradition in this land. Although most arrived seeking gold and kauri gum (highly sought after as varnish and for other products), a group ended up cultivating vineyards and producing wines that were considered of low quality by their English neighbours.
Not far removed from this version is the story of the Brajkovich family, Croatians who arrived in New Zealand in 1937 and have become one of the country's leading wineries, with numerous accolades. From the efforts of Mick and Katé Brajkovich—who had also cultivated small vineyards and made their own wine in their homeland—emerged Kumeu River, currently managed by Michael, Marijana, Milan, and Paul, the third generation and grandchildren of this couple. Under their leadership, Kumeu River Cremant is produced, a dry sparkling blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
In general, crémants are sparkling wines made in the same way as Champagne but cannot be labelled as such since they are not produced within the AOC Champagne. Initially (and according to the winery), this sparkling wine—crafted using the traditional method with a second fermentation in the bottle—has managed to surprise all who have tasted it. If this is the case (it's best to confirm with a glass in hand), this assertion is mainly due to the selection of grapes grown in the winery's finest vineyards. Among them is the Hawkes Bay vineyard, at Rays Road, on New Zealand's North Island, acquired by the company in 2017, where the grapes for this sparkling wine are harvested. In this location, various varieties are cultivated. All of them grow at a high altitude, on limestone soils that retain water well (with an average annual rainfall of 786 mm).
When producing a crémant, the sparkling wine must meet fundamental requirements to be considered as such: hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing with limited extraction (100 litres of must per 150 kg of grapes), and a minimum of 9 months of ageing. Kumeu River Cremant meets all of these. The two fermentations—the first in stainless-steel tanks (with indigenous yeasts) and the second in the bottle—will complete the character of this sparkling wine. A living history of New Zealand's wine industry.
