About Giuseppe Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi

To the world, he is a giant in the realm of wine; however, at home, he was known as Bepi. Behind every legend lies a personal story, and that of Giuseppe Quintarelli is reflected in Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi, a red wine crafted only in vintages that do not meet the standard for producing the renowned amarone. The fame and renown are attributed to the latter production, yet Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi holds its own.

Although he passed away in 2012, the spirit of this magnificent winemaker remains more vibrant than ever, thanks to his daughter Fiorenza, who, alongside Francesco and Lorenzo (his grandsons) and Giampaolo (her husband), continues to craft wines that solidify the legacy of this dynasty that began in 1924. Back then, Silvio, Giuseppe's father, dared to take the first step, laying the foundation for a great enterprise always rooted in passion and relentless work. These two values have elevated this business to the highest level, placing it among the world's finest producers. Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi is cultivated in Negrar, a village nestled in the hills of Veneto (northern Italy), right in the heart of the Valpolicella region. Specifically, the family's estate—spanning approximately 12 hectares—is situated at an altitude of 500 metres on a blend of calcareous and volcanic soils, rich in minerals like basalt. All tasks are performed manually, and when a vintage is not deemed sufficiently good, the initial plan is redirected towards wines like Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi rather than producing amarone. Nonetheless, this does not imply that one wine is inferior to the other, as Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi is crafted with the same precision that has traditionally characterised this winery.

Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi is hand-harvested directly from old vineyards over 30 years of age. The grapes are swiftly transported to the winery, where they undergo the traditional drying method so distinctive of this Italian region. This crucial step in the production of Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi involves allowing the grapes to dry until the end of January in wooden crates. This process concentrates the sugar in the berries, providing more sustenance for the yeasts that will convert it into alcohol during alcoholic fermentation. Finally, Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi undergoes more than five years of aging in wooden barrels, becoming an exceptional wine.

Each year, the Quintarelli family reviews their production, and the number of bottles becomes increasingly limited and exclusive. Without websites or social media, Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi emerges as one of the most authentic reds that best represents the tradition of northern Italy.
