About Butin Trousseau

When discussing the wines of Jura, one must mention the creations of Philippe Butin, a vintner who, since deciding to embrace the family enterprise in 1981, has seen his winery in the village of Lavigny garner considerable interest. Embracing a minimally interventionist approach and adhering to judicious standards, he offers a range of wines that impeccably embody the new generation of Jura. With 5.5 hectares of vineyards, he operates without certifications to allow for flexibility should conditions necessitate it, and he employs time-honored techniques to preserve the quintessential Jura character of the region's wines.

This ethos is evident in Butin Trousseau, a red wine crafted from the trousseau variety sourced from old vines rooted in marly soils. The vineyard is tended using conventional agricultural methods that were once practiced by Butin's forebears. With the aim of authentically capturing the varietal essence of the grape, the harvested fruit undergoes a ten-day maceration and ferments in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts. This wine is never exposed to wood. It matures in stainless steel for 14 months. At bottling, while not an ardent advocate for sulfur-free wines, a gram of sulfite is added to ensure its stability.

Although the Jura is one of France's smallest vineyards in terms of production, its wines are esteemed for their exceptional quality. Therefore, if you wish to delve into this viticultural region, Butin Trousseau serves as an excellent introduction.

2017

Butin Trousseau 2017 is a richly concentrated red wine exuding aromas of petite red berries, hints of bitter orange, and nuances of peony. On the palate, it is delightful, dense, and well-rounded. This wine boasts a discernible acidity, silky tannins, and an extended finish with subtle almond aftertastes.
