What happens when a distillery in the Highlands decides to veer off the beaten path? Teaninich answers with a whisky born from curiosity: an edition that revives an experiment initiated in 2016, making rye the protagonist of something we've not seen before in the Special Releases from Diageo. Rare, unexpected, and with the allure of things that don't quite follow the rules.
 
Teaninich has been crafting whisky since 1817, in Alness, in the north of Scotland, and has always had a distinctive way of doing things. In the year 2000, it introduced a unique filtration system for maceration among Scottish malt distilleries, a decision that speaks to its restless spirit as much as its character. Here, that personality re-emerges, this time in the form of a rye experiment that had been waiting years for its moment.
 
The result is an Single Grain Scotch Whisky aged eight years, bottled at cask strength and without any embellishments, born from the combination of malted rye and barley, matured in American oak barrels that previously held bourbon. There's something warm and indulgent about it, with the memory of spiced toffee breaking through cinnamon and clove, while the rye adds a different twist, more vibrant and slightly exotic. It's one of those whiskies that starts as a curiosity and ends up revealing much more than you expected.
 
Teaninich 8 Years Old is a bottle to savour slowly, when the evening starts to cool and you're in the mood to discover something out of the ordinary. There's no need to over-analyse it: pour yourself a glass, let it open up, and enjoy the small luxury of tasting something that didn't exist until now.
