Wine by the winery El Coto de RIoja

The largest wine grower in DOCa Rioja, with 730 hectares of its own vineyard

Since its beginnings in 1970, the winery El Coto de Rioja has followed a policy of constant reinvestment that has not only meant doubling the size of its facilities, but also significantly increasing the extension of its own vineyard and the number of barrels for the ageing of its wines. In addition, the use of state-of-the-art technology has managed to harmonise the dimension, production volume and quality of the products with the aim of producing more and also achieving continuous improvements in their quality levels.

More about El Coto de Rioja

El Coto de Rioja was founded in 1970 by a group of renowned people and with experience in the sector under the sponsorship of the industrial Bankunión. However, it took almost 5 years to launch the first vintage on the market.
1978 is the other key date in the history of the winery. It was when a young manager of the aforementioned bank, Eduardo Santos Ruiz, took over the management. His work in the organisation, control and improvement of the figures of El Coto de Rioja was so noticeable that Bankunión decided to sell it to the multinational group Bass (Alexis Lichine), offering the continuity of its management to Eduardo Santos.

Meanwhile, in 1985, with the approval of the new owners, Eduardo started his own company to produce wines in Rioja Baja, based on the concept of châteaux, with a philosophy different from the one of El Coto de Rioja , under the brand Barón de Ley.
In 1990, the Bass group, following new guidelines, decided to buy Holiday Inn. They searched for financial resources for this by selling some of its assets, among them El Coto de Rioja. That is when Eduardo Santos, alongside the venture capital company Mercapital, acquired El Coto de Rioja though Barón de Ley. When Barón de Ley, S.A. acquired El Coto de Rioja, S.A. in 1991, Grupo Barón de Ley was in fact created. This is when one of the projects with the greatest development and prospects within the winemaking sector came to be.

As of right now, Barón de Ley constitutes a Group of companies, among which we can find the winery El Coto de Rioja; Finca Museum Viñedos y Bodegas in Cigales; Viñedos Barón de Ley, the company that manages all the Group's vineyards; Bodega Máximo, which produces Vinos de la Tierra in Castilla y La Mancha; Dehesa Barón de Ley, an Iberian pig derivatives company in Extremadura; and Bodega Barón de Ley in Mendavia. Since back then, both Grupo Baron de Ley and El Coto de Rioja have had an extraordinary trajectory, supported by highly commercially successful wines.

History of the winery

The facilities of the winery El Coto de Rioja were located since the beginning in Oyón, in La Rioja Alavesa. They were opened in 1976. Since then, this winery has had a remarkable development, which has undoubtedly been possible thanks to the commercial success of its wines: El Coto and Coto de Imaz. Between 1990 and 1997, the company carried out a spectacular development, which led to be a leading winery of D.O.Ca. Rioja.

Currently, the facilities of the winery occupy around 120,000m2, one third of which are built. The newly created buildings are named after those who have had a special role in the development of the winery. All of the buildings are equipped with temperature and humidity controls, each building dedicated to a specific purpose: winemaking, ageing, bottle racking, warehouse and bottling line.

In addition, all the ageing warehouses are properly air-conditioned to ensure a correct ageing and preservation of the wines. The winery also has one of the largest stock of barrels, with around 70,000 units right now, and they also maintain the average age in all barrels, somewhere around 3 years.

All this commitment to quality and the control of all the procedures inherent to production, ageing and marketing of their wines, has allowed them to attain ISO 22000, BRC (British Retail Consortium) and IFS (International Food Standard) certifications.

Work philosophy

In El Coto de Rioja the vineyard has always been a priority, controlling the whole process from the vine to the glass. It currently has more than 500 hectares of vineyards, among which we can find the highest farm of the denomination, Los Almendros. It is the largest in extension, planted on the mountain, with some crops of rescued varieties like the Maturana.

They plant the vineyards using GPS, giving the vineyard the most appropriate orientation. The varieties are chosen according to the climate and soil conditions of the farm, but following the guidelines set by its own oenology department, as is the case of Maturana or Graciano, the main varieties of the vineyard. The plantation is also carried out in espalier, which improves the photosynthesis thanks to the increase of leaf surface, raising the bunches from the ground and avoiding problems associated with humidity. This way they can also perform a mechanised harvest. On the other hand, for the new plantations they use selected clones of low yields from their own farms.

Apart from their own vineyard, the winery cooperates with winegrowers from La Rioja Alta, Baja and Alavesa, which comprise more than 1000 hectares of vineyard. This allows them to achieve wines with the typical characteristics of each sub-area of La Rioja, which, after a good coupage, give the wines have a special character.

In El Coto de Rioja they truly believe that the wines begin in the vineyard, reason why each vineyard is controlled from the beginning of the growth cycle. The vintage is governed by quality standards, where each winegrower aims to improve the qualitative parameters of their grapes. Therefore, with a continuous follow-up of the standards, the grapes of each winegrower are classified into different categories, so that before the harvest time arrives, the winery already knows how much grapes they will receive from each category and what kind of wine they will make with them.

Wines from El Coto de Rioja

The wines from El Coto de Rioja comprise a complete range. Whites, rosé and reds, the latter with a great role in the winery.

El Coto Blanco
is made 100% with Viura; 50% comes from La Rioja Alta and the other 50% from La Rioja Alavesa. It is a very fresh wine on the nose and in the mouth, with aromas of white fruit that transition to a palate with citrus and freshness.

El Coto Rosado is made with 50% Tempranillo from La Rioja Alavesa and 50% Grenache from the farm Los Almendros, in Ausejo. It has a pale pink colour, almost like strawberry, with a sweet nose of fresh strawberries and caramel. It is a fresh and easy to drink wine.

El Coto Crianza is made with 100% Tempranillo from the three sub-areas of the D.O.Ca. Rioja, although to a greater extent of La Rioja Alavesa. It is aged for 12 months in selected 225-litre American oak barrels and it rests for at least 6 months in the bottle before it leaves the winery. In the nose it keeps the freshness of the fruit, showing the vanilla and the most emblematic aromas of the toasted oak. On the mouth it is silky and persistent, showing well assembled spicy flavours.

Coto de Imaz Reserva is made with 100% Tempranillo, mostly from the vineyards of Cenicero. It is aged for 17 months in 225-litre American oak barrels, kept in the bottle for three and a half before its release on the market. On the nose it shows a great variety of aromatic nuances, with ripe fruit and confectioners cacao standing out. In the mouth it shows a good structure, with a powerful entry, velvety, with ripe tannins and a balanced acidity.

Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is also a 100% Tempranillo, from their own vineyard in Cenicero (Rioja Alta). It has been aged in American and French barrels for a minimum of 24 months, followed by a minimum of 36 months in the bottle. Mature and elegant, its aromatic richness is changing and subtle, showing through as the wine breathes. Roasted and coconut notes along with tertiary aromas, leather and moist soil, with red fruit and nuts. Round tannins, with a complex and persistent aftertaste.

Coto Real is made mainly with Tempranillo and small percentages of Mazuelo and Red Grenache, from the old vineyards of Cenicero. Its malolactic fermentation took place in barrels, and it continued ageing for 20 months in barrels of different origins, roasts and cooperages. It was bottled unfiltered and it was refined for two years in the bottle. It has a deep cherry-red colour, with notes of mocha and coffee that garnish the wild red berries. Silky and dense in the mouth, with a long aftertaste.

Coto Mayor Crianza is made of 100% Tempranillo from their own vineyards in La Rioja Alavesa and Ausejo. It rested for 16 months in American oak barrels (80%) and French oak (20%) with a capacity of 225 litres. It has an intense cherry colour; on the nose, it shows ripe fruit in jam with a background of red fruits, with some notes of the ageing, roastings and vanilla. In the mouth, it is tasty, meaty, balanced, with a good end persistence of the fruit.

Coto Vintage Crianza is a wine with a very modern style, made with 100% Tempranillo from vineyards with a good sun exposure. It is aged for a minimum of 12 months in new 225-litre American and French oak barrels, with a broad selection of woods, and 6 months in the bottle before leaving the winery. The wine offers an intense cherry colour, with a fine aroma, roasted (cacao, vanilla, English tobacco), with notes of ripe red fruit and subtle reduction shades. In the mouth it is ample, round, fatty, with an excellent complexity of red fruit and fine toasted oak touches; elegant and long.
