Moncerbal is a red wine produced by the Bodegas Descendientes de J Palacios, in Villafranca del Bierzo, León. The winery was founded by Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo back in 1999, who fell for and saw in the potential in the region and the native Mencía variety.

Moncerbal is a ‘vino de paraje’, i.e taken from a single vineyard, situated in Villa de Corullón. The vineyard is home to slate, quartz and marble soils. The plot is south-east facing at an altitude of 700 metres, on steep slopes. The area is also home to a continental climate with strong atlantic influences. The vineyard is cultivated following the principles of biodynamic agriculture.

The vinification process is carried out using artisan methods, in open wooden vats, the grapes and must are subtly pressed, together with indigenous yeasts. Maceration is then left to take place for 35 days. Maceration is then takes place for 35days, before being decanted into small French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation is carried out as well as the ageing process.

Moncerbal represents another plot in Corullón, another another face in which the concentration provided by the soil is predominate, yet without losing the finesse that is provided by the Atlantic climate and the vibration of the old vines.

To talk of Descendientes de J. Palacios is to talk about Ricardo Perez and his uncle Álvaro Palacios, both passionate about simplifying the treatment of the vineyards and the wine production process, leading them to become pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture. The winery currently boasts 30 hectares of vineyards spread over 200 different plots, home to old vines and steep soils, which combines the organic with the immaterial in the constant search for the definition and purity of their wines.
Pictures and situation Descendientes de J. Palacios
Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
