La Viña de Andres Romeo is a great single-estate wine made by Bodega Contador in the D.O. La Rioja. It is Benjamín Romeo's (oenologist, vine-grower and owner of the winery) tribute to his father.
This wine is a Tempranillo single-varietal from the winery's estate "La Liende" in the Rioja town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The estate comprises just over 3 hectares and is situated in a bend of the river Ebro with clayey soil poor in organic material, drained by lots of pebbles from the river.
The harvest is carried out by hand. The grape bunches are hand selected in the winery and then, after being destemmed, the best individual grapes are hand selected too.
The grapes macerate for 3 days before fermentation, which lasts for 7 days at a temperature controlled at between 19 and 27ºC. After the fermentation, the grapes macerate for a further 3 days.
The free-run wine is then transferred directly into new French oak barrels where it ages for 18 months.
La Viña de Andrés Romeo is a marvellous wine, very elegant and fine, with sweet, ripe tannins.
