Alto Moncayo is a red wine produced by the Alto Moncayo winery in the Campo de Borja DO. The Alto Moncayo winery is part of the Orowines de Jorge Ordoñez group, a well known imorter of spanish wines in the United States.

Alto Moncayo is renowned amongst Spanish wines, and managed to obtain the coveted 2007 vintage Parker 100 points, becoming the first wine to achieve this feat. This achievement was again reached its 2009 vintage score.

It is worth keeping in mind that only three Spanish wines have achieved the maximum score twice in the Parker guide, Alto Moncayo is one of them.

Alto Moncayo is produce using grapes of the Garnacha variety. The grapes come from old vines between 40 and 70 years old planted at the foot of Moncayo, a mountain which stands at 2,315 meters tall.

The vines are planted at an altitude of between 500 and 800 meters, where there is a very cold and dry continental climate. Also in this region, a wind coming in from the northwest called ‘El Cierzo’ evapourate low rainfall.

These factors result in the grapes taking a longer time to ripen, which helps result in wines with lots of fruit and minerality.

The soil on which the vineyard is planted is very a stony soil, containing limestone and slate. It is a Poor soils that give exceptional grapes.

Alto Moncayo they have discovered the extraordinary possibilities of one of their historical grapes in the area of Campo de Borja: the Red Grenache or Garnacha Tinta, one of the most Hispanic varieties, where some of the wines from this winery already have a place of honour in the national and international wine ranking. If there is a nuance that defines the wines of Alto Moncayo, this is their unique balance without losing intensity, with their clear fruit-laden aromas, and their energy and personality.
Pictures and situation Alto Moncayo
For many years, Aragonese wines were used to strengthen weaker wines, both in Spain and abroad. However, in the past few years Araongese wines have managed to dramatically change this stereotype and their reputation in general. The D.O Somontano region lead this revolution during the 90´s with the cultivation of foreign varieties, but now other wine regions, such as the DO Campo de Borja, have discovered the extraordinary possibilities of one of its native varieties: Grenache, one of the most prominent varieties in Spain. It is not in vain that the DO Campo de Borja is considered "the queen of Grenache".
