This wine is aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels. Aciano is a red wine produced by Alvar de Dios Hernández in El Pego, within the D.O Toro.

After working in several different wineries, Alvar de Dios decided to start his own personal project, demonstrating the value of the old vines owned by his grandfather in the town of El Pego. His clear effort towards an organic-biodynamic cultivation and a classic production, result in fine and tasty wines. Alvar de Dios has managed to position himself amongst the most important winemakers of the area.

Aciano comes from a 3-hectare pre-phylloxera vineyard area that was owned by his grandfather, predominantly planted with the Tinta de Toro variety and others like Grenache, Mencía, etc. which are ungrafted and over 100 years old. The winemaking process is carried out in a traditional way, fermenting with its own yeasts and with a balanced maceration. It is aged in used oak barrels so that the wine is stabilised and so that it can gain complexity.

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.
