About Mas Alta Rocallós
What is achieved without effort is soon forgotten, but what requires hard work leaves a lasting impression. And if anyone knows the challenges of producing wine in an extreme region, it is Mas Alta, a winery located in the picturesque village of La Vilella Alta, right in the heart of the DOQ Priorat.
Founded in 1999 by two Belgian families, the Lambrecht and the Vanhoutte, with the guidance of the renowned French oenologist Michel Tardieu, this winery was born out of a love affair: the one they experienced upon discovering the extraordinary strength of the Priorat landscape. Of course, like all things of value, this territory does not yield easily.
"Rocallós," in Catalan, means stony. And in Priorat, that is no ordinary adjective. Here, the land is made of llicorella—an ancient, dark, and brittle slate—that challenges the roots, the viticulturist, and anyone daring enough to tame it. Yet it is precisely this difficulty that gives rise to unique, profound wines with an unmistakable identity. The rock retains heat, drains water, and forces the vine to fight for every sip of life, resulting in wines with character.
Mas Alta Rocallós is a tribute to the terroir from which it originates. An organic red wine crafted from cariñena and garnacha varieties, sourced from vineyards and terraces restored in the heart of the Montsant Natural Park. The vines grow between 345 and 430 metres above sea level, on clay-limestone and clay-ferrous soils that add even more layers of complexity.
In the winery, each variety is vinified separately, fermenting in cement tanks with native yeasts. Afterwards, the wine matures for 16 months (the cariñena in one-use new barrels, the garnacha in foudres). Finally, it undergoes 6 months of refinement in cement after blending.
Mas Alta Rocallós is a wine with vigour, structure, and elegance. A truly authentic Priorat, the kind that is not easily forgotten. For indeed, the easy is fleeting... but the difficult—like this wine—remains forever.
