About Cantine Fina Merlot
In Italy, the Merlot grape has given very good results in the north. When it comes to Italy, this French variety, the second most widespread in the world after Cabernet Sauvignon, provides the best results in Tuscany. However, it seems that the south also has something to say in this respect, because in regions like Sicily this variety reveals other characteristics. This has been proven at Cantine Fina, the winery located in Marsala (on the west coast of Sicily), where they have dared to use this variety which is typical of colder soils and areas. The result is Cantine Fina Merlot, a much warmer red wine with spicier flavours than we are used to from this grape.
The idea comes from its owner, Bruno Fina, who is unbeatable when it comes to consistency. This winegrower, who worked at the Regional Institute of Vine and Wine, met Giacomo Tachis, and together they made the perfect partnership. They both worked hard to find the perfect terroir for each variety. This approach, which is very similar to the French cru concept, has yielded great results, as they became the first in the area to plant international varieties that had never been seen before on the island. The discovery of the perfect combination of soil and variety has been the origin of a large number of single-variety wines, including Cantine Fina Merlot.
The grapes used to make Cantine Fina Merlot grow in the vineyards that Bruno’s family cultivates today in the Marsala countryside and very close to the Mediterranean. The vineyards lie at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level and are manually and organically cultivated. The climate these plants grow in is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Thanks to these extra degrees, the grapes become very ripe, with many more degrees baumé (compared to those achieved by this same variety at higher altitudes). Thanks to this, it is not surprising that Cantine Fina Merlot reaches 14% alcohol. After all, it makes sense: the more sugar there is, the more food the yeasts can convert into ethanol. Cantine Fina Merlot ferments in stainless steel tanks and is aged for 12 months in barrels.
Cantine Fina Merlot is something new. A new side to Merlot that has been unknown until now. The southern version of a northern classic.
