Xabre is a red wine produced by the winery Fento Wines, in D.O. Ribeira Sacra.

Eulogio Pomares, promoter of Zárate, is the alma mater of Fento Wines, a family winery that began its journey in 2012 with the clear aim of producing modern Galician wines with the maximum respect for the natural environment and the tradition.

They choose to use local varieties, indigenous to Rías Baixas, giving utmost importance to the vine-soil-climate-vinegrower combination, working with small vinegrowers who share their philosophy of rational and environmentally friendly work.

To make Xabre, Elogio Pomares has chosen the traditional grapes of Ribeira Sacra, Mencía, Sousón, Mouratón and Garnacha Tintorera. These grapes come from vineyards located in Manzaneda, Orense. Vines are planted between 300 and 700 meters of altitude, on terraces with soils of different composition, where we can find slate, clay and granite. The ages of the vineyards range from 15 to 80 years. The climate is cool and Atlantic.

Harvest is performed by hand. Fermentation takes place for 20 days in 500-litre barrels. The ageing process lasts 10 months in used French oak barrels and 6 more months in foudres. Before it is launched on the market, the wine is left to stand in the bottle for at least one year.

Xabre is a juicy, fresh and extremely lingering wine. The prevailing presence of the Mencía gives this wine its personality and character, also respecting the mineral notes of the terroir.

Ribeira Sacra is one of those magical places that you just have to visit to truly experience it. The vertiginous terraces rise steep on the banks of the river Sil, making the terrain difficult to work on that it requires complete manual work and labor on the vineyards. The agriculture carried out here is aptly referred to as ‘heroic agriculture’, due to the hard work carried out cultivating the land. Both red and white wines are produced in the Ribeira Sacra. The red wines are mostly made with the Mencía variety, defined by their expressive and elegant character with a good acidity. The Ribeira Sacra white wines are principally made with the Godello and Albariño varieties. They are wines with a good volume in the mouth, aromatic and fruity. The Ribeira Sacra wines are often come in very limited productions, are of high quality and with notable personalities.
