About Gutiérrez de la Vega Viña Ulises

Alicia Alonso, Cuban choreographer and dancer, said: “Human beings need it (culture) to live and to dream. People feed on fantasy: ballet, music, painting... there is no better way to generate a passion for life”.

This quote is lived out at Bodegas Gutiérrez de la Vega, where owner Felipe pays tribute to pieces of music and literature through his wines. Rojo y Negro (Stendhal), Príncipe de Salinas (the protagonist of Lampedusa’s novel El Gatopardo), Tambourine (Dylan) and Viña Alejandría (Kavafis) are some of the works this winery’s productions are named after. One of them is Viña Ulises, a red wine made by this winery using Garnacha and Giró.

Although at first Gutierrez de la Vega was famous for its sweet wines (their Casta Diva Cosecha Miel Muscat wine was served at the wedding of Felipe VI and Doña Letizia), today the second generation, led by Violeta Gutiérrez de la Vega, is committed to making reds. Viña Ulises starts life in the Jalon Valley, in Valencia (southeastern Spain), between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, on a clay and limestone soil. Bathed by the Xaló river, the Giró variety grows perfectly in this area, resulting in musts with great acidity.

From here, in the Marina Alta region, Viña Ulises is taken directly to the winery in Parcent, a small town in Alicante, where these wines have been produced since 1982. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for 5 days with native yeasts. After the Viña Ulises wine has been made, it is aged for 6 months in 225-litre barrels and 4 months in stainless steel tanks.

Finally, Viña Ulises is bottled on the estate. The best way to enjoy a true work of art.
