Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Rosso is a red wine made on the slopes of the Roccamonfina volcano in Campania (Italy), by Villa Matilde using the ancient Aglianico and Piedirosso varieties.

Villa Matilde was set up by Franceso Paolo Avallone through his passion for the wines of ancient Rome. The famous “divine Falerno” was the result of very special vinifications made with two very specific varieties: Aglianico and Piedirosso. With the aim of reviving them, this enterprising lawyer settled in the Roccamonfina area and began cultivating and making his own wines. Now his children are carrying his original passion but with the benefits of new technologies in both winemaking and taking care of the environment.

Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Rosso comes from vines aged between 20 and 50 years old, planted in volcanic soil with a high amount of phosphorus, potassium and trace metals. These vineyards lie at an altitude of 140 metres above sea level and have a density of 5,000/7,000 strains per hectare. They use traditional agriculture and reuse water for irrigation. The harvest is carried out manually, selecting the clusters one by one.

Once the Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Rosso grape reaches the winery, it is destemmed and then fermented and macerated at a temperature of 25/26ºC for about 20 days. Finally, 50% is aged for about 12 months in Allier barrels and the other 50% rests in Slavic oak barrels. It then has a time of aging in the bottle.

Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Rosso is a red wine inspired by the “divine Falerno”, a wine that was made in ancient Rome with the Aglianico and Piedirosso varieties that had disappeared, but that Villa Matilde managed to recover.
