About Vignobles Arbeau On l'apelle Braucol

Wine, the sublime elixir that symbolized the blood of Christ and safeguarded against diseases and epidemics during the Middle Ages, played a pivotal role in the Christian monasteries across Europe. Among all the orders, it was the Benedictines and Cistercians who most significantly influenced the refinement of wine production and the cultivation of vineyards, leaving behind a vast heritage. In the southwest of France, for instance, it is due to this influence that braucol is nowadays a widely celebrated grape in the IGP Comte Tolosan. Although it is a variety native to the Spanish Basque Country, it was the Benedictine pilgrims on their journey along the Camino de Santiago who introduced and established it as a significant grape for the region. At Vignobles Arbeau, a family-run winery located in the village of Labastide Saint Pierre, 42 km north of Toulouse and roughly equidistant from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, this locally esteemed grape is cultivated. Here, siblings Anne and Géraud Arbeau tend to the vineyards and oversee the vinification process, upholding the values of the Southwest.

Indeed, the estate (Château Coutinel) boasts such diverse soils, climates, and topography that they are able to produce a wide array of wines encompassing the AOP Fronton, AOP Gaillac, IGP Comté Tolosan, and IGP Côtes du Tarn appellations. In the case of Vignobles Arbeau On l'apelle Braucol, it is a monovarietal of braucol grown with sustainable agriculture practices and harvested only when it reaches proper maturity with an optimal concentration of aromas. The winemaking process is traditional, carried out in vats at a temperature of 24°C and macerated for three weeks with daily pump-overs in an oxygen-free environment.

The result is Vignobles Arbeau On l'apelle Braucol, a wine that, as its label suggests, is affectionately referred to as "braucol" in this particular region of southwestern France. It is a tribute to this tannic, robust, and intriguingly fragrant variety that was once esteemed by the Benedictines themselves.
