Although the Torre Fornello winery was set up in 1998 by Enrico Sgorbati, the truth is that the estate in Placenza, in the west of Emilia Romagna (Italy), has a long history. The first rural settlements here date back to no less than 1200, and the place where most of the vineyards are planted today was home to a kiln (“Fornello”) where the early settlers baked lime stones and made bricks to build houses. And that’s where this winemaking project gets its name. The property, which was built in 1400 with majesty and elegance, has been owned by the Sgorbati family since 1982 and, with the aim of truly reflecting the personality of this territory, the entire estate has been restored without losing any of its authenticity. Their wines are also made with the same philosophy.
Torre Fornello Zu is a red wine made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from vineyards planted on mostly clay soils at 250-300 metres altitude. Starting from a philosophy of low intervention, their work is 100% organic with organic certification and limited yields of 50 q.li/ha. Once the grapes have been harvested by hand, they are fermented with native yeasts in steel tanks and macerated on the skins for 25 days. No sulphites are added and finally the wine ages for a few months in stainless steel tanks.
Elegant, enveloping and balanced, Torre Fornello Zu is a red wine that perfectly reflects the landscape of this estate with so much history and tradition behind it. A harmonious wine that speaks for itself.
