The Mazzamurello is a little goblin typical of the folklore of the Abruzzo region in central Italy. Playful and mischievous, this creature (which also lives in the forests of northern Italy) is mischievous and often gets into trouble. However, in Torre dei Beati, a winery located in Loreto Aprutino (a village 30 minutes from Pescara), they claim that they’ve also seen him messing about near their barrels. According to the story, this character, who belongs to the world of fairies, is the cause of the unique taste of Torre dei Beati Mazzamurello Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a red wine where the Montepulciano takes on unusual nuances which aren’t customary in the area.
The main reason for this peculiarity is due to the 20 months’ ageing on lees in French oak barrels. The rest of the vinification process continues in the same way: selection of the grapes in the vineyard during the harvest (in 20 kg boxes), a second selection in the winery and fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
In the countryside, Torre dei Beati Mazzamurello Montepulciano d'Abruzzo can be summed up in grapes from the property, grown 25 km from the Adriatic, on clay-limestone soils at 250 meters’ altitude. Here the grapes grow under the Abruzzese pergola, the traditional vineyard training system proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the area's landscape. These arbours are part of the 21 hectares of vineyards that extend over the first hills of the Gran Sasso d'Italia (the highest massif of the Apennines). This situation means that the grapes grow under the warm air masses of the Adriatic Sea and under the cold air masses coming down from the mountains (which are already snow-capped at the time of ripening).
