About Porseleinberg Syrah
Porseleinberg Syrah is a red wine made with the Syrah variety by the Porseleinberg South African winery in the Wine of Origin Swartland denomination, in the Coastal Region.
Named after Swartland’s Porselein mountains, where the winery is located, Porseleinberg’s vineyards are difficult to access but oenologist Callie Louw knows how to take the fruit and produce something spectacular. Since 2009, the winery has been owned by Boekenhoutskloof, and although most of the grapes are used to produce their wines, a small amount is used to create Porseleinberg wines.
Porseleinberg Syrah starts life on top of the mountain with grapes cultivated using environmentally friendly practices. The location is difficult to access and requires meticulous manual work. The yields are very low at 3t / ha and as a result the berries are very small and concentrated.
Once the Porseleinberg Syrah clusters have been harvested by hand, they are pressed whole in concrete tanks and spontaneously fermented with native yeasts. There are minimal pump-overs throughout the process, where the cap is plunged, and finally the wine ages in foudres for 12 months.
Influenced by his time at Domaine Jamet in Côte Rôtie (France), wine-grower Callie Louw shows his mastery of South Africa’s star variety in this Porseleinberg Syrah. World-class intensity and concentration.
2018 | Porseleinberg Syrah 2018 is a concentrated red wine with intense aromas of red and black fruits, notes of olives and hints of pepper and oak spices. On the palate it is balanced, pleasant and elegant. A deep, fruity wine with textured tannins and integrated acidity. It has a lingering and very persistent finish. |
