Pomum Syrah is a single-variety Syrah red wine produced by Pomum Cellars in Columbia Valley, in the American state of Washington (USA).
Pomum Cellars is the personal project of Spanish couple, the Alfonso’s. Originally from Ribera de Duero, Javier and his wife Shylah have brought all their knowledge to the Columbia Valley wine region, where they strive to convey the maximum expression of the variety through artisan and limited-production wines.
Pomum Syrah comes from vineyards located in the Yakima Valley, the first American wine region established in Washington that now has the highest concentration of wineries and vineyards in the state. The vines are cultivated using environmentally-friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.
In the winery, once the Pomum Syrah grapes have been carefully selected, they are destemmed and pressed to begin the winemaking process. First they macerate and ferment at a controlled temperature and then the wine is aged Burgundy-style in 225- and 500-litre French oak barrels for 16 months.
Bearing in mind that the Syrah variety in the Columbia Valley is characterised mainly by its aromatic intensity, the producers of Pomum Syrah have managed to preserve this with skill and good taste.
