Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille

In 1980 it was known around the world. With great success in the United States and recognised worldwide, the D.O.C.G. Brunello di Montalcino has become the birthplace of great and powerful reds with great depth, like Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille.

The warm and dry climate, together with the rocky and less fertile soils, make this mountain village in southern Tuscany a unique place. The Gaja family (renowned winemakers in Piedmont), with a long winemaking history, realised this and in 1994 bought the Pieve Santa Restituta winery. Their property lies in Montalcino, a medieval town in Siena, where the Pieve, or parish church, of Santa Restituta is located. Acquiring 40 hectares of Sangiovese in 1994, this family became the new custodians of a local tradition that dates back to the 12th century.

Now, Angelo Gaja continues to make the famous Brunello di Montalcino from his own grapes grown in the clay and limestone soils of his historic plots of Sugarille and Rennina (no buying from third parties). This first vineyard appeared in the parish register made in 1547. In total more than four centuries with the same character and the same name, which has been maintained in Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille, the red wine that is made there.

Angelo Gaja’s personal and demanding winemaking methods, based on temperature-controlled fermentations in stainless steel vats, macerations, pumping over for two weeks and malolactic fermentations, together with 24 months aging in oak barrels and another 6 months in cement tanks, all work together to make Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille a true luxury.
