About Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay

Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay is a single-variety Chardonnay white wine made by Seth Morgen Long in the Willamette Valley of Oregon (on the northwest coast of the United States) within the A.V.A. Eola-Amity Hills.

Seth Morgen is a native of North Carolina, but when he was just 9 years old his parents moved to the Willamette Valley. And that is where his passion for wine started. Backed by his studies at the International Sommelier Guild and the experience he gained in the US and France (working with Erica Landon, Patrick Taylor, Thibaud Mandet, Sarah Cabot, Matt Connell, Brian Sieve and more), Morgen founded his Morgen Long winery in the winter of 2014, focussing exclusively on Chardonnay grapes and the Willamette Valley. That meant Seth Morgen became the first winemaker in the area to specialise in (or perhaps we should say “become obsessed with”) this variety, which grows on very varied soils of volcanic basalt, marine sedimentary sandstones (12 million years ago the area was part of the Pacific seabed) and loess displaced by the wind. Summers can be cold, cloudy and humid, with mild winters following rainfall (averaging 1060 mm per year). These conditions motivate and help the Chardonnay grapes to grow successfully, with not very high temperatures (an average of 16ºC during the growing season), low temperature range and favourable humidity conditions (very similar to Champagne or Burgundy). The grapes used to make Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay come from two vineyards planted between 2012 and 2016 in the Eola Amity hills, where they are cultivated in a completely sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Morgen Long’s commitment is so strong that 1% of the profit goes to Stripe Climate, a coalition of different companies working to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

The Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay grapes are hand-picked at the optimum point of ripeness (with a good balance between sugar and acids). Before pressing, the lots are sorted and then crushed in two different cycles and phases: a harder one, at high pressures, where many solid compounds are extracted (never with sulphur) and another softer and cleaner one (which uses sulphur and spends 8 to 12 hours settling). Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay is a blend of Seven Springs and the second vintage of X Omni. Both batches are transferred to stainless steel tanks, including the solids, where a fermenting must is added to start fermentation. Before it is ready, Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay is racked to Damy oak barrels from the French forests of Allier, Bertrnages, Jura and Vosgues, with long, light toastings. Each year Seth Morgen buys new barrels that are combined with used ones. The wine will spend one year in this container at high reduction levels, where malolactic fermentation will also take place. Finally, when this second fermentation has finished, Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay returns to the stainless steel tanks, where the final blend is created. After 18 months, and after filtration, Morgen Long Eola Amity-Hills Chardonnay is bottled.
