About Michelini i Mufatto Balsa de Piedra
Located in the Andes Mountains, on the border between Argentina and Chile, is Tupungato, one of the most important cities in the Uco Valley, in Mendoza (Argentina). The Tupungato volcano, one of the 10 highest volcanoes on earth, towers over the city. The name, Tupungato, means “the observer of the stars” in the local language, which makes perfect sense when you find out it’s 6,570 metres high. This is where Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini discovered the uniqueness of their terroirs and decided to showcase them to the world in their purest form under the name Michelini i Mufatto.
One of the wines this famous pair of winemakers has launched is Michelini i Mufatto Balsa de Piedra, a blend of the Malbec and Cabernet Franc varieties. These are old vines cultivated in a respectful way and growing in different plots in Tupungato. In the winery, 70% of the grapes are destemmed and the remaining 30% are kept in whole clusters to provide freshness and structure. The different varieties are co-fermented with native yeasts in cement tanks. The wine is then aged for 15 months in French oak barrels that have been used before.
All of this makes Michelini i Mufatto Balsa de Piedra a pure interpretation of a vineyard with history. A legacy of the Michelini i Mufatto family (their son Manuel also works with the couple) where they seek austerity rather than exuberance and transparency rather than pomposity.
