José María de Heredia was a French poet who ascribed to Parnassianism. This movement, which emerged in the second half of the 19th century, was born as a reaction to the subjectivism and sentimentalism of Romanticism. This artist is honoured with the Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes red wine.
In principle, this artist is the perfect figure to bring this wine to life. There was no one more suitable to inspire, fleeing from all personal opinions. The greatness of the Pineau d'Aunis coupage made by Domaine Brisau is meant for everyone to experience. There’s that, and also the fact that the winery’s owner, Emile Hérédia, is related to the writer. Domaine Brisau wanted to pay tribute to him. You might already be familiar with this wine. You may even associate it with another winery, like Domaine de Montrieux; however, it is not the same wine. Originally Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes was made by Émile Hérédia at Domaine de Montrieux. Now no longer operating, winemaking continues at Domaine le Briseau with Nathalie Gaucher, his partner and owner of Domaine le Briseau (a company that she in turn set up with her former partner, who has now passed away).
Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes is a new wine under an old name; a very special cuvée of Pineau d'Aunis, a variety the winery owners have put their trust in from the beginning. When the foundations of Domaine Briseau were laid in 2002, Pineau d'Aunis was the main red variety grown. At the time, this decision fell to Nathalie Gaucher (co-owner and Émile’s partner), who at the time was just starting out with Christian-Chaussard, her husband at the time who died eight years later in a tractor accident. At that time, this couple found a wonderful place on the northern slopes of the Loire (in the centre of France), with clay and limestone soils, where they began to cultivate four hectares of old vineyards that has now grown to eleven. The vines used to make Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes are more than 80 years old. As is normal, these oenological gems must be cultivated with extreme care, which is why Domaine le Briseau opted for biodynamic cultivation and minimal intervention from the outset.
Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes is harvested by hand and the bunches are vinified whole in fibreglass vats. The winemaking process begins with a semi-carbonic maceration that lasts about three weeks. In this blend, where the clusters are left whole, the percentage of destemmed clusters varies according to the vintage. After that, Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes ferments in fibreglass tanks using native yeasts and is aged for approximately 12 months in the same tanks. After that, it is time for pressing (the only intervention during the whole process) and once the wine is extracted, Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes is bottled, adding a minimal amount of sulphites.
It may have the same name. It may be the same variety. But we can assure you that the new iteration of Domaine le Briseau Le Verre des Poetes will not disappoint you.
