La Plage is an organic white wine made by Vins de la Memòria with the Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Gris varieties in the IGP Côte Vermeille (Languedoc-Roussillon).
Vins de la Memòria is a project created by sommellier Xavi Molla in honour of his grandfather and those who suffered during the Spanish Civil War. This is a collection of wines made in the wine regions of Terra Alta, Priorat, Conca de Barberà, Alella and Roussillon to commemorate dramatic events in history that cannot be forgotten.
La Plage pays tribute to the 400,000 people on the Republican side who went into exile in France after being defeated. Argelès beach in Roussillon was transformed into a large refugee camp, and now, the vineyards located in the same place, on the Camino de la Retirada (Madeloc), are used to make this wine to remind people of something that should never be allowed to happen again. These vines are planted on slate soils at about 400 metres above sea level and are ecologically cultivated with a limited yield.
La Plage is an unprecedented wine made from a coupage of fermented Garnacha Gris. It is aged in a single 650-litre chestnut cask for 5 months with the Garnacha Tinta variety vinified as a “blanc de noirs”. As well as this coupage, they add a small dose of stale sweet wine from the year 1939. Finally it is bottled unfiltered, so may contain sediment.
La Plage is all about being a wine that awakens consciences and feelings. An unusual blend of varieties and vintages that is certainly unique.
