About Josep Foraster Pep
A tribute to the oldest in the house; but also the youngest. Josep Foraster Pep is a red wine named after the first and latest generation of this family who have been making wines in the D.O. Coca de Barberà since 1998.
The relationship of this family with the Mas Foraster estate, right in Montblanc, dates back to 1828 when Ramón María Foraster and his son, the first Josep Foraster, acquired more land to raise cows, pigs and chickens. The grapes and olives from their vineyards and olive groves were sold to the Montblanc cooperative until Josep’s son (also named after his father), started to reform the winery and produced the first wine at the end of the 1990s. Today, the project is more alive than ever, producing natural wines with minimal intervention under the leadership of Ricard Sebastià Foraster (nephew of the late Josep) and his son. Can you guess what he’s called? Josep Foraster too! And because it’s all about Josep’s and Pep’s, this winery had no choice but to make a wine that honoured this name, and that’s how Josep Foraster Pep was born.
Josep Foraster Pep is a single-variety Trepat, a variety native to the area, traditionally used to make rosé wines, but which nowadays plays a leading role in the production of red wines. In the case of Josep Foraster Pep, fermentation, carried out with whole bunches (including the stems), takes place in cement eggs, one of the winery’s favourite materials. In fact, this is where the wine is aged for 10 months on its lees. Likewise, another of the features that makes Josep Foraster’s wines unique are the long macerations lasting more than 35 days (40 days for Josep Foraster Pep), in order to enhance all the profiles and aromas of the (organically cultivated) grapes. Finally, malolactic fermentation adds the finishing touch.
The Josep Foraster Pep grapes are grown in the old vineyard of La Robina, which is about 80 years old, where white alabaster soils abound, reflecting the light.
Long live the Joseps! Long live the Peps! And long live Josep Foraster Pep!
