About Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz

Riesling, the leading German variety, has spread throughout the world and particularly in certain regions of the New World where the cold climate is more favourable. One such region is the Clare Valley in southern Australia. There, people like Jim Barry, the first qualified winemaker in this wine region, was able to see the potential of the place and turned the area into a world leading Riesling producer. After his death, Jim Barry Wines is still owned by the family and run by his three children, Peter, Mark and John and his three grandchildren Tom, Sam and Olivia, who maintain the legacy with the same respect and love as its founder.

But Jim Barry doesn’t live by Riesling alone. Because their Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz, a single-variety Syrah, is considered one of the best Australian wines. Sourced from an iconic vineyard, named ‘Armagh’ by Irish settlers in honour of their homeland, it has old, low-yielding vines on sandy gravel soil. The climate is continental with a strong contrast between the cold nights and the hot days, which provides a very fruity grape with a good level of acidity. Once in the winery, the grapes are selected and destemmed to begin vinification with temperature-controlled fermentation and aging for 14 months in new oak barrels.

Chosen as “Winery of the Year” by the prestigious Matthew Jukes, Jim Barry Wines produces other highly acclaimed single-variety wines as well as being recognised for their great Rieslings. Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz is proof of this. A delicate, deep and elegant Syrah from the New World.
