Herrada is an ecological, clay-aged red wine made by Bodegas Cerrón with the Syrah variety in the D.O. Jumilla, in the Murcia region (Spain).
Bodegas Cerrón is a young and innovative project that was created with the aim of paying tribute to the winemaking tradition that dates back to 1895 in the municipality of Fuente-Álamo, in the upper part of the D.O. Jumilla. To do this, they use abandoned high altitude vineyards that are recovered through ecological practices to produce authentic wines with their own identity.
Herrada comes from a vineyard located in a very limestone area at an altitude of more than 900 metres. These vines were planted in 1989 and are cultivated without the use of chemical products, instead opting for organic and biodynamic treatments. When the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are manually harvested.
In the winery, Herrada is vinified with 40% of the grapes left with their stems. A cold maceration begins and fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in clay amphoras. Finally, the wine is bottled without clarifying or filtering.
Herrada is a very Mediterranean wine, but one that is also surprisingly smooth and fresh. By not spending any time in wood, this wine reveals the purity of the Syrah grape from calcareous soils. A gem to hold onto for 10 years.
