About Gerovassiliou Syrah
Dionysus, the illegitimate son of Zeus, is known as the God of wine in Greek mythology. It all began when Zeus had to hide him from his wife and called upon the rain nymphs and Silenus to take care of him on Mount Nisa. There, the boy became an expert in agriculture and vine cultivation and produced a fermented drink; what we now call wine. He then went on a pilgrimage around the world trying to spread the culture of wine among mortals. And he certainly did a good job because he is the figure we owe the honour and enjoyment of wine to. An ancient tradition that spread across the whole of Greece and, in particular, the large number of winegrowing projects that have set themselves up in different parts of the country. One great example is Vangelis Gerovassiliou. A character with a unique talent and a winery called Ktima Gerovassiliou, where he showcases the love he has for his homeland. Located in Epanomi, 25 kilometres southeast of Thessaloniki, he started the project by reviving his family’s vineyard. On this estate, he mainly plants native varieties and has built a winery with new generation facilities.
The result could not be more exciting. Wines like his Gerovassiliou Syrah, made from a variety with a large and loyal following in Greece, show the control Vangelis has of the vineyard. The grapes are sourced from the oldest vineyards on the estate that are cultivated using respectful agriculture and limited vine yields. Once the grapes reach the winery, they are macerated with their skins and fermented with native yeasts for 20 days. They then undergo malolactic fermentation. Finally, the wine is aged in French oak barrels in the underground cellar for 12 months.
With precise control of the Syrah variety, Gerovassiliou Syrah is a rich, opulent and round wine. A single-variety wine made in the P.G.I. Epanomi which perfectly justifies why the God of wine is Greek.
