Gaintus Radical is a red wine made by the Heretat Mont Rubí winery, located in the town of Font-Rubí to the north of the D.O. Penedès.

The philosophy of the winery is to support traditional, sustainable viticulture that is respectful of the environment, seeking balance between the grape strains and the environment, and at the same time incorporate new technology.

Gaintus Radical continues the Gaintus project that was started in 2000, which was the winery's bid to restore and reclaim the Sumoll grape variety. This variety is widespread across Catalonia, but was disappearing for many reasons, including phylloxera, the delicacy of the variety, the difficulty to cultivate it, and because it was being substituted for white varieties used in the production of cava in this area.

Gaintus Radical grows in a vineyard situated more than 500 metres above sea level, planted with a vertical guiding frame on wooden posts. It is selectively harvested, and a cold maceration of its skins is carried out on arrival at the winery. It undergoes a light extraction process, with manual 'pigeage' and light vertical pressings. It is aged with its own lees in second year French oak barrels for 6 months.

It is a very elegant, floral and fruity wine with a lively, straightforward taste, demonstrating its varietal character. It is the most appealing version of the Sumoll variety.

Heretat Mont Rubí was the first winery in the world to made and market, in 2001, a varietal wine of Sumoll. This is now part of the history of Penedès and of the wines from Catalonia, and it must be included in the world’s wine encyclopedias. This new scenario was the direct effect of a lot of effort and a methodology used as the base of that essential professional skill of joining strictness and imagination, which are so characteristic of the artist. It can be called a renewed philosophy, but the truth is that after years of effort and tough decisions, Heretat Mont Rubí is now immersed in a brand new winemaking project aimed at achieving high-level qualitative values in their personal wines.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
