Unlike other fictional comic book superheroes, Batman does not have superpowers. He fights crime and defends himself from villains using his intelligence and building the most sophisticated gadgets, devices and weapons. Accompanied by his super assistant Robin, the boy wonder, they work together every day and succeed in everything they do. As in many areas of life, the secret of their success lies in a perfect partnership. In the world of wine, Bruno Clair and his winemaker Philippe Brun produce wines that are so well loved around the world that this pair have even been nicknamed the “Batman and Robin of Marsannay”. At their Domaine Bruno Clair winery, near the village of Marsannay-la-Côte in the Marsannay denomination (Burgundy), they make red, white and rosé wines with no other aim than to be faithful to the essence of each individual vineyard.
One of the wines they make through their expertise and minimal intervention is Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin, a single-variety Pinot Noir from vineyards planted on Jurassic limestone soils in the AOC Gevrey-Chambertin/Côte-d'Or, the region with the highest concentration of Grands Crus reds. The vines are cultivated using organic agriculture and the grapes are harvested and selected by hand. Then in the winery, the grapes are partially destemmed before fermenting in wooden vats using native yeasts for 14 to 21 days. Finally, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, 20-50% of which are new, where it spends 12 months before bottling.
With great respect for the soil and a winemaking process focussed on searching for the expression of each terroir, these two Burgundy superheroes produce fine wines with their own identity. With wines like Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin they are becoming one of the true greats of the region.
