About Azul y Garanza Desierto
As Mies van der Rohe, the staunch advocate of paring down elements to their essential form famously declared in his “less is more” philosophy, the beauty of the desert lies in its stark simplicity and its power to beckon us into a contemplation of the universe's magnificence. The vast expanse between sky and earth, where time appears to stand still and where one can experience a sense of infinity and unbridled freedom. It is within one of these deserts, the Bardenas Reales, that the genesis of a project by Dani Sánchez and siblings María and Fer Barrena took root. Three audacious vintners, captivated by the magic of Europe's largest desert situated in Navarra, Spain, dare to convey its grandeur to the world through their wine. Organic productions crafted with minimal intervention and utmost dedication, capturing the essence of this immensely incredible desert landscape.
Among their entire wine portfolio, their flagship wine is undoubtedly Azul y Garanza Desierto, a monovarietal of Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from a single vineyard at the northern edge of the Bardenas Reales Natural Park in Navarra. This represents a unique terroir at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level, with an extremely arid clay-limestone soil and significant temperature variations between day and night. When combined with the introduction of regenerative techniques aimed at restoring and enhancing soil health, increasing biodiversity, and promoting sustainable water retention, one encounters a vinous gem that captures the desert landscape's purest essence. In the winery, following manual harvest and meticulous selection of the finest grapes, a 12-day fermentation with indigenous yeasts and an 18-day maceration are carried out. Subsequently, the wine is transferred to 300-liter French oak barrels and matures over 15 months before bottling.
As a limited production wine, Azul y Garanza Desierto stands as the treasure of this dynamic winery. A wine that, as represented by its bottle with the golden label and capsule adorned with clouds, emerges as the embodiment of the connection between heaven and earth, capturing the very essence of this majestic and ethereal desert landscape where the “less is more” ethos reigns supreme.
