Although vineyards in Pomerol have been cultivated for centuries, in reality their vinification and wines are a relatively recent development, because it was not until the end of the 19th century that a true vocation of viticulture came about in this area of Bordeaux. In particular, it was not until 1900 that the winegrowers of Pomerol formed the “Syndicat Viticole et Agricole de Pomerol” with the aim of setting apart the quality of their wines from the rest, taking the first step towards the subsequent 1936 classification of the A.O.C. Pomerol. One of the estates responsible for creating the denomination is Château La Croix de Gay. An estate with five centuries of history whose Pomerol parish records specify that it has been run by the Lebreton family since 1772 and is considered one of the oldest to directly highlight the exceptional viticultural potential of the Pomerol terroir. There is a reason why it is one of the most popular crus among Pomerol fans.
The truth is that the estate has an exceptional terroir that allows it to offer rich wines like its great wine of the same name: Château La Croix de Gay. A blend that combines Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes of a superior quality from vines planted on high terraces with gravel soils. In order to grow quality grapes that are as representative as possible of their plot of origin, the Lebreton family practices respectful agriculture with particular attention to the plants. Once in the winery, the bunches are placed on a vibrator to spread the grapes and remove the floral residues before the double sorting process, which is carried out before and after destemming. Vinification and maceration are carried out in cement tanks equipped with thermoregulation. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels and is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels from various cooperages.
Although Pomerol is the smallest of the great Bordeaux denominations and one of the youngest, its attributes are well known throughout the world. Wines like this Château La Croix de Gay more than demonstrate this. A powerful wine that is a true icon of the denomination.
