Château d'Aiguilhe 2018 is a concentrated red wine with lush notes of black fruit jam, blackberry tart notes and hints of potpourri and undergrowth. On the palate it is enveloping, fresh and opulent. A medium to full-bodied wine with bright acidity and soft tannins. The finish is long with lots of layers of exotic spice.
The so-called Hundred Years’ War was a war between the kingdoms of France and England that actually lasted 116 years (1337-1453). The fighting was mainly about the possession of French territories, and after England took possession of French land, France finally recovered its lost areas. Château D'Aiguilhe found itself trapped in the middle of many of the battles. Lying on the border between the French and English front lines, the castle played a very important strategic role. So if there is one thing this winery has, besides exquisite terroirs, it is a long and interesting history. Something that was clearly appreciated by Vignobles von Neipperg, the group owned by the von Neipperg family, who have been involved in viticulture since the 13th century and have been making their Château d'Aiguilhe since acquiring the estate in 1998.
Sourced from the property’s 90 hectares of vineyards, Château d'Aiguilhe is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vines are planted on clay-limestone and clay-loam soils and are arranged on the plateau to benefit from the sun’s exposure. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually in small boxes. When the grape bunches reach the winery, they are selected before and after destemming. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled wooden vats for 40 days. Finally, malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine is aged in used French oak barrels for 12 months.
Château d'Aiguilhe is made from one of the great gems of the AOC Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux (Bordeaux). A fresh, exuberant and extremely delicious wine that has been made by Stephan von Neipperg and is therefore a safe bet.
