Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch 2018 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of ripe black and red fruit accompanied by notes of Provençal herbs. On the palate it is rich, lively and elegant. A medium to full-bodied wine with very fine tannins, firm acidity and a wonderfully long finish.
Of the large number of French Calvinist Huguenots who during the 16th century were persecuted by Catholic France, some 300,000 fled to neighbouring countries like England and Holland or to Dutch and English colonies in the Americas and Africa. It was the Huguenots who brought winemaking to South Africa, and it is from this important point in history that Boekenhoutskloof was born, a century-old winery located in a beautiful spot in the Franschhoek Valley, in the Coastal Region, which was founded in 1776 by Huguenots who fled from the French wars of religion. The estate, whose name means “gully of the Boekenhout”, a Cape beech tree that is highly prized for furniture making, was purchased and restored in 1993 by a team committed to developing and growing South Africa’s wine industry. So much so that the house is responsible for several prestigious wine brands in the country, like The Wolftrap, Porcupine Ridge and The Chocolate Block.
Marc Kent, managing partner and technical director of Boekenhoutskloof, is not afraid to innovate. He will try anything. But always with an eye on quality. This is clear to see in Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch, a Cabernet Sauvignon red wine sourced from a vineyard located in the Helderberg township in Cape Town (WO Stellenbosch). Due to the type of soil, altitude and mild maritime climate the grape has a characteristic graphite profile. In the winery, the berries are cold-soaked in stainless steel tanks and begin alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature of 27-30ºC. This is followed by a long malolactic fermentation in 225-litre oak barrels. Finally, the wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.
Concentrated, deep and elegant, Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch reveals all the power of the Franschhoek Valley. The wine culture of this place has a lot of history that is winning over more and more people all the time.
