Bacchus Awards 2021, a coveted recognition

Winning an award at Bacchus, the International Wine Competition held annually at the Casino de Madrid (Spain), is an international recognition of quality. Run by the Spanish Tasters Union (UEC), this competition involves a professional jury made up of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, sommeliers, producers, importers, journalists and critics from all over the world, trying wines from many different countries. This year, over the course of three days (26th to 28th May), 80 members tasted no less than 1,692 wines in a blind tasting. And although all of them could have been awarded the highest distinction, the Great Golden Bacchus, only 32 wines were given this well-deserved recognition.

The Great Golden Bacchus

This award is so highly coveted because it is a guarantee of excellence. A significant boost for a wine in any category. There are five types of wine eligible for these awards: red, white, rosé, sparkling and fortified and a ‘best wine of 2021’ is chosen from each category. Winners of this award include Vilarnau Ecological Brut Rosé Reserva made by Bodega Vilarnau, which won Bacchus 2021 Best Sparkling Wine and Oloroso Tradición VORS made by Bodegas Tradición, which won Bacchus 2021 Best Fortified or Liqueur Wine. 32 red wines were awarded Great Golden Bacchus this year, including Ramón Bilbao Mirto 2015 and Carmelo Rodero Reserva 2017 and the fortified wine Noé Pedro Ximénez VORS.

Bacchus 2021 Best Winemaker

However, there is more to the competition than the Great Golden Bacchus. In addition to awarding the Great Golden Bacchus, Golden Bacchus and Silver Bacchus, it is no surprise that in an International Wine Competition with so much history behind it also recognises the world’s best winemakers. At the 2021 competition, there were three big winners. The Bacchus 2021 Best Sparkling Winemaker was awarded to Bruno Colomer from Bodega Codorniu, the Bacchus 2021 Best Still Winemaker was awarded to the Czech Jirí Toman from the B/V Vinarstvi winery and, finally, the Bacchus 2021 Best Fortified and Liqueur Winemaker was awarded to José Maria Quirós from Bodegas Tradición.

Here at Decántalo, we want to congratulate all the winners for such well-deserved awards. Likewise, we want to celebrate everyone who participated in the contest who spend their days putting all of their effort and passion into creating some much-loved gems. Thank you to you all!
