About Belguardo Codice V
When we think of clones, many people picture a laboratory with scientists and test tubes. But in the wine world this is not the case at all. The truth is that since time immemorial winegrowers have made use of cloning to propagate their best vines. This is a technique where a cut is made to an already established vine in order to graft another existing vine to it and thus shape a series of improvements in the final characteristics of the fruit. Those who have invested time, money and effort in obtaining the best characteristics of the Vermentino grape from Corsica are the Mazzei family, a historic family in Tuscany who in the 1990s acquired an estate in the Tuscan Maremma, attracted by its favorable characteristics for cultivating vines. On one hand, the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, on the other hand, the cool temperature range of the hills, allows the production of experimental wines with unique personality and superior quality.
As the result of an advanced research project, they present Belguardo Codice V, a wine made from cloned vines of the Vermentino variety from Corsica, rooted in sandy soil at about 250 meters above sea level. The main tasks are carried out by hand and the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripening. At the winery, 80% of the grapes are fermented in steel tanks at low temperature for 30 days and the remaining 20% in amphorae with maceration on the skins for 4 months. Finally, the wine is aged on the lees in the same steel tanks and amphorae for a few months.
Thus, Belguardo Codice V is an authentic Vermentino created by one of the historic families from Tuscany. A most captivating experiment to enjoy this variety in its DOC Maremma Toscanaversion.
2019 |
Belguardo Codice V 2019 is a luscious white wine imbued with scents of white fruit and hints of citrus, all underpinned by a mineral backdrop. On the palate, it is delightful, sophisticated, and richly layered. An elegant and exquisitely refined wine boasting a robust structure and a characteristically bitter finish typical of the vermentino grape. |
