At the beginning, the Domènech family only had their effort, their enthusiasm and the first and primitive 10 hectares of vineyard that they needed to recover in Capçanes. This vineyard of old vines was located in a protected natural area, 500 metres above sea level, where we can now also find the winery Vinyes Domènech. The family’s commitment, now stronger than ever, is to respect the land, the environment and the landscape as the essence of their wines, and a lifestyle marked by the territory, the culture and tradition. The winery’s alma mater is Joan Ignaci along with his wife, Rita, as well as their two sons, who have passion for viticulture in their veins, like their parents. The winery is located at 450-500 metres of altitude between the mountain range Sierra de Llaberia and the Montalt, surrounded by mountains with dense forests and underground fountains, with a unique microclimate and diverse soils. And it seems that these conditions are ideal and necessary for the Domènech family to produce unique wines, faithful to their landscape, carrying out each process efficiently through green and sustainable practices. In short, it is a corner where you can walk among vineyards and discover the importance of soil, wind, rain and a boutique viticulture, organic and biodynamic.
History of the winery
The project and the winery were started in 2002, in Capçanes, Cami del Collet, in the middle of an emblematic farm of 15 hectares of forest and old vineyards located in an environment of great ecological value, within a protected natural area. Right now, the winery is located in a bioclimatic and functional architectural building, integrated in the surroundings. It generates electricity with 90% renewable energy, uses rainwater and recovers natural sources, thus covering all water supply needs.
It is an innovative project that vouches for the GreenCeller idea, an integral concept of the whole process that includes organic vineyard, bioclimatic architecture and green technologies, which help to minimise the deterioration of the landscape, the fauna and the flora, to avoid modifying their ecosystem and habitat. This took into account the orientation of the building, the burying of the vinification and ageing floor, the thermal insulation of the building, the ventilated roof, the energy storage areas, the forced natural ventilation, the chimney-effect of the windows, the solar protection in summer, the photovoltaic solar panels and geothermal energy.
In fact, with the support of the Leader programme and as a part of the international cooperation project ‘Más vino, menos CO2’ (More Wine, Less CO2), Vinyes Domènech was the first winery in the denomination of origin Montsant to certify the greenhouse gas emissions of each bottle used in its wines.
Vinyes Domènech is also one of the 5 Catalan wineries in which one of its wines, ‘Teixar’, has been classified as ‘Vi de Finca’ since June 2015. This recognition, awarded by INCAVI, not only distinguishes the unique and climatic features, but also the wines made from grapes from the same farm, which follow more demanding protocols set by the D.O., in terms of production, yields and scores for their qualification, and which have a category and national and international recognition over a period of ten years. Teixar de Vinyes Domènech is the first wine from D.O. Montsant and it was the fourth wine in Catalonia to be granted this prestigious supra qualification.
Vinyes Domènech’s entire work philosophy is focused mainly on its location and natural environment. The climate of the area is dominated by the humid east winds in summer and the cold and dry north winds, mainly the Mistral, which enters through the Ebro basin, in spring and winter. Rainfall is scarce, between 350 and 500 litres per year, and is most abundant in autumn and spring. Temperatures are high in summer and mild in spring. This microclimate delays the growth cycle of the vines and contributes to a slower ripening, providing the maximum expression to the Grenache variety.
From an organic point of view, this area is dominated by calcareous materials and dolomites with layers of gypsum, marl and clay, which appear in different areas of the farm.
The sloping lands have a moderate to steep inclination of 10-35% and are mainly facing north-east. The upper section, in the forest, is crowned by outcrops of limestone and dolomites from the formation of the Pre-coastal Mountain Range.
The winery owns 10 hectares of vineyards, planted with Red Grenache, Garnacha Peluda (Downy Grenache), Merlot, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, White Grenache and Maccabeu. All the vineyards are surrounded by rocky formation, crowned by vertical, calcareous walls of the Pre-coastal Mountain Range. 80% of them are Grenache, of which 2 hectares are Garnacha Peluda originally from Tarragona, very scarce in the world. The vineyards are of a very low yield and organic cultivation.
Vinyes Domènech’s socially responsible approach is carried out through a series of initiatives aimed at preserving the most natural and sustainable viticulture and winemaking. The difficulty of accessing the plots due to the slopes and the planting framework leads the winery to carry out a manual viticulture. This, together with the variety and depth of the soils, leads to the application of different types of viticulture to achieve the maximum balance of the plant.
Thanks to the height, the winds and the temperature variations between day and night, the plants’ growth cycle is delayed and slower, and the ripening of the Grenache grapes is the most suitable for mature and elegant tannins.
The low productivity of its vineyards together with green pruning, when necessary, is the first selection at the foot of the vineyard. The harvest is selective and is carried out by areas and plots in 15-kg boxes. The grapes are harvested early in the morning to avoid high temperatures and immediately enter the winery. Here, they vinify each plot separately, even several times depending on the ripeness, resulting in small vinifications.
Wines from Vinyes Domènech

Bancal del Bosc Tinto is made with 85% Grenache and 15% Samsó (Carignan) from vineyards with red clay and calcareous soils. The grapes go through the alcoholic fermentation and the maceration for 20 days. The ageing takes pace for 6 months, partly in French oak and partly in stainless steel deposits. The aromas of red fruit stand out, along with the balsamic notes of Mediterranean undergrowth. In the mouth, it is sweet, with ripe and elegant tannins, deeply balsamic, with liquorice, resinous and with undergrowth flavours, predominantly red fruit, with a fresh and long finish.
Bancal del Bosc Blanco is made exclusively with White Grenache from a 400-metre-high, north-facing terrace, protected by the forest from the east winds and with clayey-calcareous soil. The wine remains 5 months on its fine lees in stainless steel deposits. It has an intense aroma of fresh white fruit, mainly pear and apple, with citrus notes, white flowers and hints of fennel. In the mouth, it is sweet, with white fruit, pear and white almond blossom, aniseed and aromatic herbs, with a long and persistent finish and pleasant saline touches.
Boig per Tu is a red wine made with Red Grenache and Carignan. It is aged for 8 months in French oak. It has intense aromas of ripe fruit, such as blueberries, blackcurrants and Mediterranean undergrowth herbs. In the mouth, it has a warm entrance, a good acidity, with mature and elegant tannins. The red fruit and the balsamic notes stand out.
Furvus is a red wine made with 90% Grenache that is over 40 years old, planted on slopes with a 15º-inclination oriented north-south, with prevailing Mestral and Levante winds, and 10% Merlot. This wine ferments with spontaneous yeasts and each terrace is vinified separately in steel deposits, with 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels. Aroma with good intensity of ripe red and black fruit, such as redcurrant, blackberries, cherry with balsamic notes of liquorice and aromatic herbs of Mediterranean undergrowth. In the mouth, it is elegant and balanced, with prevailing ripe red fruit, balsamic notes and spices. It has mineral notes of flint, with a long finish and saline notes.
Rita is a white wine named after Joan Ignaci’s wife. It is made 100% with white Grenache from vines grafted more than 50 years ago, located in 3 plots with very different soils: 0.3 hectares of llicorella, 1 hectare of very stony clay-limestone on the surface, and 0.5 hectares of white quaternary alluvial silty clay (‘Panal’), aged for 5 months in old French oak barrels. It is a wine of great aromatic complexity, with citric notes (a twist of mandarin, lime) with a background of aromatic herbs (fresh fennel, dry bay leaf), enveloped with a pleasant salinity and minerality. In the mouth, it is ample, fresh and long, with a diversity of aromatic herbs and an ocean breeze.
Teixar is qualified as ‘Vino de Finca’. It is a pure varietal of Garnacha Peluda (Downy Grenache) with more than 70 years planted on slopes of 15º inclination, oriented north-south with prevailing Mestral and Levante winds, planted on clayey-calcareous soil with a very stony surface, shallow soils and poor in organic matter. This wine ferments with spontaneous yeasts and the vinification is carried out separately in 300- and 500-litre barrels. Then, it is aged for 14 months in old French oak barrels. This wine has a great complexity, with an intensity of ripe red fruit, such as redcurrant, blackberries, cherry with balsamic notes of liquorice and aromatic Mediterranean undergrowth herbs like lavender, rosemary and spices. In the mouth, it is velvety, elegant and balanced, with prevailing ripe red fruit, balsamic notes and spices. Extremely complex, persistent and a long finish with saline notes.
Vinyes Velles de Samsó is a varietal of Carignan (Samsó) that is aged for 12 months in French oak. It has complex, intense aromas of ripe fruit, such as blueberries, blackcurrants and Mediterranean undergrowth herbs, with floral notes of violets. An elegant wine, with tension, long and tranquil, with volume and fruit, structured and harmonious.
