The winery Teso La Monja has become, despite its youth, one of the reference wineries in the area of Toro. And thanks to the Eguren family, this winery produces highly renowned wines with the traditional strength of the Toro wines but also providing a very fine and elegant palate, common denominator in the wines produced by this family.
Teso La Monja was founded in 2007 by the Eguren family, a family from Rioja with a great vine-producing tradition. They started the production of wines five generations ago. Dominio de Eguren, Sierra Cantabria or Viñedos de Páganos are some of the famous wineries that the Eguren family owns in Rioja. From Rioja they made the leap into the Designation of Origin Toro. They immediately fell in love with that land and accepted the challenge: a harsh climate for the ripening and Tinta de Toro grapes, a powerful grape able to transmit all the strength and minerality of the land, but at the same time, trying to add the hallmark of the Eguren wines: a great kindness, fineness and elegance. That is how they founded its first winery in Toro, the extremely famous winery Numanthia Termes, where they produced one of the greatest Spanish wines of all times, Termanthia, which got precious 100 Parker points. In 2008, they sold the winery to the French group Louis Vuitton-Möet Hennessy, but not before acquiring some other vineyards, which would be used in order to build its new project in Toro: the winery Teso La Monja.
With the experience acquired in the D.O. Toro at the head of the winery Numanthia Termes, the Eguren family purchased 100 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Valdefinjas, Toro and Villabuena del Puente. These vineyards are advanced in years, pre-phylloxera, about 50 years old and with 130-year-old vines aimed at the production of the great wines of the winery. The soils of these vineyards are sandy, with much gravel in the surface and marked by a continental climate, which is very cold in winter, with plenty of frosts, very hot weather and very dry in summer. They only produce one variety, Tinta de Toro, with very low productions, perfect for the production of wines with the maximum purity. All the processes are conducted in a handicraft way. They apply a sustainable agriculture with organic fertilisers and without weed-killers. The grape harvest is carried out manually and the grapes undergo a meticulous process of selection by means of a double-belt conveyor. In order to obtain a precise wine-making, this process takes place in five different types of deposits. It is important to stand out the deposit used for the wine-making of Teso La Monja, since it has an odd ovoid shape which helps to obtain a silkier wine.
