One of the hallmarks of the winery Remírez de Ganuza, led by its founder Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza, has always been the pursuit of constant innovation and the use of new techniques to improve the quality of their wines and the winemaking process.
HISTORY OF THE WINERY Bodega Remírez de Ganuza was founded in 1989 by Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza. During the 70s and 80s Fernando dedicated his time to buying and selling old vineyards in the Rioja Alavesa area, which made him a great expert in the area and thus a great expert in La Rioja wines.
When he decided to set up his own winery, Fernando knew exactly which estates from the area were the best to develop his project.
It is for that reason that, from the start, Bodega Remírez de Ganuza has put a strong emphasis on the vineyard, on rigorously selecting the grapes, and on intervening as little as possible in the wine-making process in order to be as faithful as possible to both the vintage and the grape.
Remírez de Ganuza has always been an innovative winery, immersed in a constant search for the best winemaking process. Elements such as the sorting table, the use of new barrels for ageing and chilling rooms were used in this winery when no one else was using them.
The winery is situated in the centre of Samaniego (Álava), a small and pretty stone-built village at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, with only 325 inhabitants but a long winemaking tradition. The outside of the winery is perfectly integrated with the surroundings. Various stone buildings surround a central patio, which is bustling in activity during the harvest. The inside of the winery is the complete opposite. Modern, innovative, and smart. It almost seems like a laboratory in search of the perfect formula.
PHILOSOPHY OF WORK Remírez de Ganuza has over 80 hectares of vineyards distributed between various villages near the Sierra Cantabria. The classic grape varieties of LaRioja are grown: Tempranillo, Graciano, Viura and Malvasía. The old vines are on average 50 years old and have low yields.
The first selection occurs in the vineyard. Only the highest quality grapes are picked, healthy and ripe. The grapes are picked by hand, in 12 kg boxes to ensure a perfect transfer to the winery. Once they arrive at the winery, they are put in refrigerated storehouses for 24 hours at a controlled temperature of between 4 and 6 degrees, to maintain the optimum point of ripeness.
The grapes then go to the sorting table where the seeds are separated and the grape-juice is collected. They then divide the grape bunches into two parts: the upper half and the lower half. The grapes from the top of the bunch are the most mature since they are the most exposed to the sun and are used for Reserva wines. The grapes from the bottom of the bunch are used for young wines. Once the bunches have been separated, the grapes are destemmed and washed in their own juice.
The wine ferments in small stainless steel deposits and French oak vats and malolactic fermentation occurs in new French oak barrels. The wines from Bodega Remírez de Ganuza are aged in new French and American oak barrels.
WINES FROM BODEGA REMÍREZ DE GANUZA When talking about wines from Bodega Remírez de Ganuza, Remírez de Ganuza Reserva and Remírez de Ganuza Gran Reserva must be mentioned, considered to be two of the greatest exponents of the signature wines of La Rioja. Their older brother, Trasnocho, is a great example of the excellent production at the winery. The babies of the house also deserve special attention. Erre Punto, a vintage white and Erre Punto Tinto a young carbonically macerated wine.
