The winery is located on a small hill righto on the outside of Elciego (Álava), on the way to Laguardia. Since 1974, the winery has been owned by the Masaveu Family. The Masaveu family’s winemaking tradition dates back to the time of Federico Masaveu Ripoll, who in the mid-19th century built his own winery in Castellar del Vallès (Barcelona), where the family originated. A century later, the Masaveus returned to this winemaking vocation that their ancestor started with the purchase in 1974 of Bodegas Murua, in Elciego, a town historically dedicated and linked to the cultivation of the vine, and where we can find from family vineyards to medium and large wineries. It is currently one of the most famous municipalities in Rioja Alavesa for the quality of the wines they produce there.
History of the winery
The building that houses the winery is a stately medieval mansion that fully respects the traditional architecture of the area through the use of noble materials such as stone and wood, in perfect harmony with the manor houses that make up the rich heritage of the village. The winery’s facilities were built for this purpose and were designed to receive and manually select the grapes after the harvest. Also, to be able to produce and age the wines in the best possible conditions.
Murua has 110 hectares of its own vineyards, most of which are located around the winery in Elciego, although it also has other plots in neighbouring municipalities such as Leza or Laguardia. The vineyard is located in a farm divided into 8 plots, planted with different varieties depending on certain factors, such as soil, orientation, sun exposure of the bunches, etc. to achieve the highest quality with each type of grape. The plots that surround the winery form a beautiful landscape where the view is lost in the immensity of the vineyards and where the senses are stimulated by the colours, aromas and the evolution of the fruits until their harvest.
The clayey-calcareous soils are located at 450 metres above sea level, and with the mild Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influences they form a unique terroir that allows the production of classic and elegant wines. The average age of the vines, mostly Tempranillo, which is around 45 years old, is another decisive factor that gives vigour and delicateness to their wines. Among the different varieties, we can mainly find Tempranillo, apart from the local varieties Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, Malvasía and White Grenache.
Within the facilities that house the main building, the winery has an exclusive library, unique in Rioja, where hundreds of volumes contain everything that has been written about wine, from the 16th century to the present day. In the library, which is open to researchers, you can find scientific, literary, essay, legal and informative texts, represented by the main authors who have written about wine and its technical and cultural environment. It currently has 2,350 valuable and unique inventoried volumes, as well as the catalogues corresponding to the wine auctions held by Christie’s and Sotheby’s, which already surpass half a million copies.
Among the treasures are very old manuscripts, testimonies of the history of wine, such as the Book of Taxes of Logroño (1774-1796), deeds of purchase and sale of vineyards dating from the 17th century, facsimiles of rare titles, now out of print, and first editions. The winery also has a collection of art; paintings, furniture, decorative objects, which are represented by the names of prestigious artists like Tomás Hiepes, Juan de Arellano, Fernando Sotomayor, Valentín Zubiaurre, Francisco Bores, Daniel Quintero and Miquel Barceló.
Year after year, Murua carefully carries out its own cultural work during the growth cycle of the vineyard, ending with a strict control of the ripening of the berries, which will determine the optimum time to carry out the harvest. Following the traditional formulas used in Rioja, this task is carried out manually and in small boxes, selecting and separating the grapes according to criteria such as the area of production, age of the vineyards, productivity of the plots, quality, etc.
Once the trailers arrive at the winery, the boxes are weighed and the bunches are unloaded on the selection belt, choosing the grapes by hand, bunch by bunch. At this point, samples are taken once again to analyse, set the parameters and maintain the quality control systems of the grape. After the destemming and pressing of the grapes, the first fermentation takes place and the must is separated from the solid parts of the grape berries. This process is followed by a second fermentation or malolactic fermentation in French oak vats with a capacity of 18,000 litres.
Murua produces mainly avant-garde and expressive wines, and Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. Therefore, ageing is a fundamental part of the production. The barrel stock consists of 2,200 Bordeaux units of 225 litres of capacity, with French and American oak and a small part of Caucasian oak. The barrels are renewed every 3 years, at the latest. During the aging period, the red wines are racked using the traditional ‘canilla-vela’ system, which allows each of the barrels to be controlled. This operation is carried out three times during the first year and twice during the second year of the wine’s ageing in the barrel. Both the choice of the woods and their care is a very important point in the ageing of Murua wines.
After the ageing, the wines rest in the bottle rack for a few months to reach the optimum degree of ripeness and roundness. The bottle racks of Murua are located in underground cellars and caves with a capacity to hold 1,500,000 bottles in perfect temperature and humidity conditions. Usually, the Murua Reserva wines remain in the bottle for 18 months and the Veguín and Gran Reserva wines are kept in the bottle for at least 36 months.

M de Murua is made with an exclusive selection of Tempranillo (92%) and Graciano grapes from the winery’s oldest vineyards in the area of Elciego. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels with high toasting, and the wine is aged in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels for 14 months. On the nose, it is intense, with good notes of toasted wood and spices that envelope the aromas of ripe red fruit and jams. Complex and mature. In the mouth, it is intense, balanced, with lively and sweet tannins, and a long, powerful, voluminous and structured mid-palate, with mineral nuances that mark the expression of the terroir.
VS de Murua is made with 92% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 3% Mazuelo from a special selection of grapes. This wine is aged for 16 months in French (10%) and American (90%) oak barrels. It has aromas of ripe red fruit, notes of cocoa and sweet hints of vanilla, balsamic nuances with a good intensity and persistence. In the mouth, it is fruity, velvety but strong, with a voluminous mid-palate, with a pleasant finish and a medium persistence. The presence of fruity nuances combined with the sweet tannins of the oak stands out.
Murua Reserva is made with 90% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 2% Mazuelo. This wine is aged for 18 months in 225-litre American and French oak barrels, with a maximum use of 3 years. It has elegant notes of vanilla, toffees and subtle balsamic notes, warm aromas among which ripe red fruit jam, liquorice and cocoa stand out. In the mouth, it is silky, voluminous, warm and strong, with an elegant aftertaste, long-lasting, where the balsamic and the sensations of marmalades and compotes reappear.
Murua Gran Reserva is made with 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, from an exclusive selection of the best grapes from vines aged over 30 years, with limited editions of bottles numbered according to vintage. Each variety is harvested and vinified separately and then combined after the malolactic fermentation in French oak vats. Then, they are aged for 26 months in Bordeaux American and French oak barrels. It is clarified using egg white. It has aromas of red fruit with hints of compote and touches of tobacco and cocoa, sweetened with a pleasant presence of soft vanilla. In the mouth, it is silky and expressive. The flavours of wild berry jam and nuances of vanilla stand out. Elegant and soft with a warm and long aftertaste. Very persistent and with very good complexity.
Veguín de Murua is made with 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, selected from the oldest vineyards, over 60 years old, located in the best farms of Murua. This fact limits the production to 2,500 kg/ha. The grapes are harvested by professionals who remove the defective or unripe fruit. When they arrive at the winery, they carry out a new selection of bunches on the conveyor belt. The malolactic fermentation is carried out in wood, in 18,000-litre French oak vats, on its lees. Then, for 22 months it is aged in new 225-litre French and American oak barrels. The wine is then gently clarified and bottled with minimum filtering. The rest of the ageing takes pace in the bottle rack, with a minimum of 18 months. Elegant and intense aroma, with dairy, vanilla and cocoa notes and sweet sensations. As it is aerated, it intensifies and changes the nuances to jams and red fruit. In the mouth, it has an intense, velvety, acidic hints, intense and velvety, with a strong mid-palate where cocoa, red fruit and tobacco notes stand out, with an intense, warm, pleasant and very long finish.Murua Blanco is made with 50% Viura, 30% Malvasia and 20% White Grenache from the oldest vineyards in Murua. Following an old traditional formula, it is fermented for 13 days at a controlled temperature in new Bordeaux barrels, remaining on its lees that are selected and mixed or discarded according to the quality of their aromas and flavors during this task. On the nose, it is sweet, intense and long, with aromas of yellow chamomile flowers, honey and nuances of pears in syrup. In the mouth, it is strong and with a good acidity. A fine and elegant mid-palate, with pleasant nuances of white flowers.
