Bodegas Luis Cañas is a historic winery situated in La Rioja. Since the beginning of the early twentieth century, they have strived to produce good quality wines based on the philosophy that a good wine can only be obtained from a good grape. An old vineyard, manual work and a careful selection of grapes is the hallmark of this winery.
The Cañas family have been linked with wine for over a century. Since the beginning of the early twentieth century, Carlos Cañas, father of Luis Cañas, has been dedicated to the production and sale of young wines made by carbonic maceration.
The wines are produced in caves and then transported in a variety of ways: by a boat with the capacity of 50 litres, on foot or with the help of mule-drawn wagons. They can travel up to 100 kilometres, crossing the Sierra Cantabria and Montes de Vitoria, until they reach Bilbao and San Sebastian where they are sold.
In 1970, Luis Cañas built a new winery. These were the times of selling unlabeled bulk wine with a great vision for the future. Luis Cañas began selling bottles of young wines made by carbonic maceration labeled with their own brand. A few years later, in 1985, Luis Cañas made their first aged wine.
In 1989, Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, took the reins of the winery and in 1994 built a new winery equipped with the most modern processing systems which would enable a qualitative leap in the production of their wines. They began to add selection criteria to the grapes in their vineyards and later tables for bunch selection. Juan Luis´ perfectionist and meticulous character meant that Bodegas Luis Cañas are always searching for ways to improve the production of its wines by making constant improvements and additions to the winery.
In 2009, Juan Luis Cañas founded the Amaren Winery in honour of his mother Ángeles. The winery is situated in La Rioja and it strives for perfection in the entirety of its development process.: from the vineyards and selection to the process and aging.
One year later, Juan Luis participated in a new project in Ribera del Duero. Dominio de Cair. A winery with very old vineyards and a low yield: The idea was to create great wines of international reference, based on a careful selection of the grapes.
PHILOSOPHY OF THEIR WORK
Luis Cañas has 350 hectares of vineyards: from his own vineyard to the one controlled by the winery. There are 870 small plots spread over the area of Rioja Alavesa, one of the most recognized traditional wine areas worldwide.
The majority of the plots have calcerous clay soil, slopes and terraces with elderly vines that have a low production. This does mean that there are small bunches of grapes being produced but they are of a very high quality.
They work in a very environmentally friendly way. They do not use any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or aggressive work on the land and all the work in the vineyard is done by hand.
Once the grapes arrive at the winery, the sorting of the grape bunches begins and the grapes are selected. Only the best grapes are placed into the deposits for production. Once they are de-stemmed, the grapes are placed into wooden vats where the fermentation takes place.
The ageing of the wine takes place in French and American Oak Barrels with the average aging process being three years, before placing it in bottles and getting it ready for the market.
