It was 2001 when Josep Grau finished his oenology studies and decided that he wanted to make wine with Grenache like the Chateauneuf du Pape, one of his favourite wines. This led him to look for an old vineyard, with a special character, which he found in Capçanes. It was a one-hectare farm with two different soils, one clayey and one calcareous, with a vineyard of more than 100 years planted after the phylloxera plague. Alongside his wife, he decided to build a winery in the middle of the vineyard, but the current legislation only allowed him to build 50 square metres, so when the production became larger, he had no choice but to look for another location. He found in Marçà, in Mas Figueres, a farm 3 km away from the first one. In 2003, he opened the Dosterras winery, in a house of the early 19th century. In 2006 he equipped seven wine-tourism rooms for wine aficionados. The farmhouse was built by scientist Juan de la Fuente as his own refuge where he could carry out his studies. The house has an Indian-like feel, due to the relationship of the scientist with Peru, which made him the ambassador of this country in Spain. Since it was built, and due to the incomparable surroundings where it is located, the house was also a haven for many artists and singer-songwriters who made it their provisional accommodation. Here they searched for peace and inspiration, and it was also the provisional residence of Luc van Isenghen, one of the pioneers and promoters of the new Priorat wines.
History of the winery
However, after several harvests, Josep Grau received the offer of a buyer who wanted to purchase his first winery Dosterras, which he finally sold. Despite this fact, he is still very involved with the winery, as he continues to be in charge of its technical management. This encouraged him to build a new winery, also family-oriented and located in the municipality of Marçà, within D.O. Montsant. They currently produce around one hundred thousand bottles of different wines, of which 70% are exported, and the rest are left in the national market. Right now, the winery manages 26 hectares of vineyard in several points of D.O. Montsant, and with all kinds of soils. They have small yields per vine, from 500 grams in the vineyards that are over 70 years old, to 1.5 kilos per vine in the vineyards from 15 to 40 years. The varieties they grow are White Grenache, Red Grenache, Samsó, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
The main goal of Josep Grau is to take the fruit from the vineyard to the bottle with all its natural characteristics. Therefore, all the tasks are done by hand, from pruning to harvesting. It practices an organic viticulture, and biodiversity, without using aggressive processes on the plants or the soil. This is how it achieves extraordinary quality grapes, but with very low yields. Their 26 hectares of vineyard are distributed in approximately 20 farms in the municipalities of Marçà, Capçanes and Falset. They have different soils, altitudes and orientations, and they are planted with old vines that range between 40 and 100 years old, some of them forming part of the old Priorat. Each of these sites, with a Mediterranean climate and continental shades, presents a different geological origin. Therefore, in the plots of Marçà we can decomposed granite, limestones and clays in Capçanes, and llicorella in the vineyards of Falset .
This state-of-the-art winery is environmentally friendly at all times, and one of its basic characteristics is that wines from Josep Grau are not corrected, and they are just as they come from the vineyard. From the beginning, they work with native yeasts and minimum levels of sulphur dioxide, to simply ensure the correct preservation of the wine. The fermentations are carried out in cement deposits (90%), and the rest in stainless steel and oak. The wine rests in 2000-litre made of Austro-German oaks mostly, and 500-litre barrels made of French oak from several cooperages.
At the winery they also hold public and private cultural and gastronomic events, with the aim of enhancing knowledge on various cultural aspects and winemaking know-how. These wine-tourism events, open to the public, consist of live readings, photography, art and music, with guests of a recognised professional and human reputation. In fact, like their wines, these gatherings are a different vision of wine-tourism in Falset - Marçà. This is why they are called "Of wine, life and terroir", because they are the three pillars of this winery's philosophy: passion for wine, a history of life, and a land that has enabled the creation of the winery Josep Grau Viticultor.

L'Efecte Volador is made from a coupage of Syrah, Red Grenache and Carignan from several plots in the municipality of Marçà. These vines are over 30 years old, planted on clay and decomposed granite soils, and cultivated organically. This wines performs a spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, in 17,700-litre cement deposits. 50% of the ageing takes place in French oak barrels for 4 months, and the other 50% is left in the cement deposits to preserve all its fruit expression. It has a delicate aroma, marked by black fruit and fresh fruits reminiscent of ripe cherries, with outstanding notes of bonfire stones, smoky hints, ash and graphite.
Vespres Blanco is made with White Grenache grapes and other white varieties from a farm with 6 hectares located in the municipality of Marçà. It is planted with 32-year-old vineyards, on decomposed granite soils, and cultivated organically. It performs the spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in 2000-litre oak foudres. Then, it is aged for 5 months with its lees in the same fermentation foudre. It has a subtle aroma that evokes fruits and white flowers, with notes of aniseed and wild flowers, and delicate tropical notes of mango. In the mouth it is ample, attractive, fresh, with a well-integrated acidity and a mineral hint.
Vespres Tinto is made with Red Grenache (90%) and Carignan, from plots with vineyards that are 50 and 70 years old, located in the municipalities of Marçà, Falset and Capçanes, planted on soils of different compositions and textures: stony, clayey and calcareous, and organically cultivated. It ferments in 17,700-litre cement deposits and is aged for 7 months in 500-litre oak barrels and 2000-litre foudres. On the nose it is blunt, with black forest fruit, ripening sensations on a mineral background, with balsamic notes that combine with the warmth of the most aromatic sandalwood. It has a fresh aftertaste and good acidity.
Regina Rosado is made with 90% Red Grenache and 10% White Grenache from a 1-hectare farm located in the municipality of Marçà. It is planted with 90-year-old vineyards, on calcareous soils and with organic cultivation. It performs a spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, at a controlled temperature, in 600-litre barrels made of Austro-German oak. It continues to age for 6 months in barrels on its lees. It has a coppery, seductive pink colour, with a unique nose of withered rose and sweet spices. In the mouth it is creamy, ample, with an extremely sweet and long finish.
La Florens is the wine that Josep Grau dedicates to his mother, Florens. It comes from a farm with Grenache of 3 different ages: 40, 70 and 100 years. It is located in the municipality of Marçà, planted on soils with a clayey composition, although this wine comes from the selection of grapes of the 100-year-old plot. It ferments with native yeasts in cement deposits, and it is aged in 2000-litre foudres made of Austrian and German oaks, for 13 months. It has aromas of black cherries, wild red fruits, and minerality. It is a wine full of sensations, seductive within an elegant and aristocratic subtlety, where the balsamic aromas are complemented by spiced Mediterranean herbs. With volume in the mouth, elegant and deep, fresh and complex at the same time.
