El Bierzo is an old gold mining area where the mineral-rich soils, the continental climate, and the countless century-old vines encourage the production of great wines.
It is a unique region because of its magnificent sites, its diversity of soil and unique lands. It is also a route that pilgrims from all over the world follow to reach the city of Santiago de Compostela, where the relics of the apostle Santiago (St James) have been venerated for over 1,200 years. In recent years, young winemakers have settled in the area with very plausible initiatives, but there have also been major investments in the creation of modern local wineries such as Godelia, whose results have quickly shown in their renewed and personal wines.
History of the winery
Bodegas y Viñedos Godelia was founded in 1994, as a result of the respect for nature and the enthusiasm for viticulture of the García Rodríguez family. These descendants of Galician farmers created a new agronomic concept by making wines in accordance with traditions through an integral and sustainable process.
The winery is located in the region of Pieros. Its architecture, which is integrated into the landscape, is based on the construction of a typical farmhouse of the area, and is located in a privileged enclave that witnesses the passage of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Its facilities are functional and follow improved traditional techniques to guarantee the utmost respect in all the production processes. For this matter, the winery also has a stock of 350 French and American oak barrels of different capacities.
The winery has more than 35 hectares of vineyards, distributed in three farms with different altitudes and orientations. The vineyard of the farm Leguas comprises 30 hectares of vineyards on a single plot, which is rare in the Bierzo region. Here you can find the native varieties of the area, Godello and Mencía, trained in espalier. The plot has an east-west orientation and has a peculiar microclimate. This way, they can understand the needs of each sub-plot and obtain low yields and higher quality grapes. The Castro farm is quite particular since it could be considered as the first point of development and the start of El Bierzo.
The farm, close to the ancient Celtic settlement that gives it its name, has 5 hectares of old vines of Godello and Mencía. And finally, the so-called Laderas Centenarias farm, which is one of the most important legacies of El Bierzo, has century-old vineyards on hillsides with different slopes, soils and orientations that reflect the complexity and uniqueness of the area. This diversity of vineyards also provides very different soils on the different plots. Among them are slate soils, which provide minerality and acidity to its wines, protect the roots and keep the humidity levels stable, which allows them to obtain very aromatic and quality wines.
On the other hand, soils with boulders are one of the soils that best reflect the personality of the area, as well as helping the drainage and expansion of the roots in depth. Also, the clay soils are a storage of water and organic matter that the plant needs. These soils are usually combined with sand in different proportions, depending on the plot and soil depth.
The environment and the vineyard, together with the knowledge and management of the soil, allow them to respect the personality of each vintage from the vineyard to the winery, thus transmitting the character of each plot to the wine. The technical part is carried out by the oenologist Olga Verde Viéitez. They work with vines between 40 and 60 years old, on which they practice a rational viticulture, with plant cover, very short pruning to reduce the quantity and stimulate the quality, and up to three or four green prunings. The harvest is carried out according to the variety, vintage and destination of the wine, and it is done manually, in 15-kg boxes. Before entering the winery, the grapes are carefully selected by expert hands.
Once in the winery, the grapes remain between 24 and 48 hours in cold chambers to obtain the maximum aromatic extraction. The maceration is carried out in 8,000-litre stainless steel deposits for 16 or 18 days, vinifying each plot separately.
This wine is aged for 350-, 400- and 500-litre French oak barrels. Of these, 60% are second use, 30% are new, and the remaining 10% are used for white wines.
The winemaking process is governed by the principle of maximum strictness in maintaining the purity of the variety, avoiding the wood from relegating the excellence of the grape to a secondary level. Therefore, the result is a very varietal wine that is extraordinarily representative of the area of production and the soil. It preserves the fruity notes of the variety and a touch of minerality, where the wood accompanies without masking, providing creaminess.
