HISTORY OF THE WINERY
Finca La Emperatriz formed its name form Eugenia de Montijo, Empress of France, and the owner of the vineyard at the time. It won a prize in the competition of wines at Exposición Universal de 1878 in Paris for a wine made in Baños de Rioja.
Subsequently, the house became the property of the House of Alba and finally left the Hernáiz family, who had aquired it in 1996 after buying it from the heirs of Conde de Torremúzquiz.
Nowadays, brothers Eduardo and Victor Hernáiz are in charge of the winery. When they bought the vineyard it was not in the best condition, but the Cenicero famiy had already seen the potential in the land, the climate and vines for the production of its wine. Finca La Emperatriz is a dream for this family and they did not want to leave the methods that had been built up at the winery over the years. Therefore, they promised to continue producing wines that they liked and decided to look for people who would like the wine they produced.
PHILOSIPHY OF THEIR WORK Finca La Emperatriz is located in the north-west corner of La Rioja D.O (Original Denomination), 12km from the town of Haro between the mountain range Cantabria and Demanda, and at 600m altitude it is one of the highest areas in Rioja Alta.
Finca La Emperatriz can boast about two elements that make it very special. First of all, the land of the winery is unique to all of Rioja. It has very poor soil and it is very hard. However, this enables them to make elegant wines and minerals with great aging potential. Secondly, the high altitude at which the farm is located makes the climate more continental than the usual Rioja. Additionally, due to the influence of the Cantabrian Sea, it is also calm. It is the soil and the micro climate that makes the Tempranillo grapes ripen in the most optimal way during September and October.
The farm has an area of 101 hectares, allowing them to develop their own wines with grapes from the estate, mostly Tempranillo but also grow Viura and Garnacha. The two brothers, however, divided this great vineyard into different microclimates and soils according to the criteria, enabling them to conduct an enology and viticulture that is personal to each of these plots. As a result of this, each of these wines has a different personality.
At Finca La Emperatriz they advocate great artisan and, aided by new technologies, they always produce excellent wines. Their passion for artisan follows a philosophy based on love of the land and a passion for winemaking.
