D.O.: D.O. Montsant
The winery Espectacle Vins does not exist as such, since the wine is made in the wineries of Laurona de Montsant wineries, owned by Josep Maria Mainat and Toni Cruz, former members of La Trinca and successful TV producers. However, the main characters of this project are people who are closely linked to the world of wine: René Barbier, Isabel Meyer, Christopher Cannan, Fernando Zamora and Marta Conde. Each of them provides their knowledge and experience in the production of this exceptional wine.
René Barbier, born in Tarragona in 1950, and descendant of the French family dedicated to winegrowing since 1200, has dedicated his entire life to the world of wine, just like his ancestors, having trained in the most prestigious wine schools of Bordeaux, Bourgougne and Limoux, and having also worked in very prestigious wineries, such as Moueix, producers of Petrus, among others. His experience in the world of wine goes from viticulture to marketing, and obviously going through the production of his own wines. In 1979 he bought his first farm in Priorat, where he vinified his first wine in this area: Clos Mogador.
Isabel Meyer, the wife of René Barbier, was born in Nancy in 1952. Her life is linked to art and creation, carrying out studies in the Ecole Superior de Choreographie of Paris, among others. Currently, she is as a promoter of cultural projects in Priorat and Tarragonés, such as the Prior-Art Association, dedicated to the development of art and culture in Priorat. Since 1993 she has been working with René Barbier in Clos Mogador, being responsible for image, design, public relations and publicity. Among her most outstanding creations is the painting on which the label of Espectacle was based.
Christopher Cannan is passionate about the world of wine. He was raised in the UK, and has studied in Switzerland, Germany and Spain. During the 70s, he travelled to the main wine producing areas in Europe. His desire to work with the highest-quality wines led him to create Europvin in 1978. In 1997, advised by René Barbier, the bought the vineyards Clos Figueres in Gratallops. In 1999, he founded the Laurona winery with René, in the area close to Montsant, where Espectacle is made. He is currently in charge of Espectacle in all the markets outside Europe.
Fernando Zamora was born in Tarragona in 1960. He graduated in Chemistry in 1982, he achieved his doctoral degree in 1988. After this, he moved to Bordeaux to graduate in Oenology. Currently, he balances his job as a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Oenology of Tarragona with the his post as an advisor of wineries like Laurona and Clos Mogador. He has published more than 30 scientific articles and fifty articles about Oenology. He is the author of the book "Crianza y envejecimiento del vino tinto; aspectos científicos y prácticos" (Ageing and maturing of red wine; scientific and practical aspects).
Marta Conde was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1964, she graduated in Biology from the University of Barcelona, and later in Oenology from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. After working as a technician in Priorato for four seasons, she joined the team at Clos Mogador and currently works in several brands of the group, including Espectacle.
Throughout this year, all the vine training is carried out using a vertical support that allows it to expand its leaf surface. In January and February, the winter pruning is carried out, and the layer of grass is mechanically controlled, cutting it several times during the spring and early summer. The aim is to keep it, to improve water retention, control the vigour of the vines and prevent erosion. Maturity controls start at the beginning of September, distinguishing between younger and older areas. Therefore, two controls were carried out at the same time. In addition to the maturity controls of the pulp, the skins and the seeds, grapes were tasted as the month went by, to look for those aromas and the harmony that define this unique wine. Since climate and phytosanitary conditions are generally excellent, the growth cycle can be extended until the quality and concentration are optimal. The harvest is starts with the younger parts, it is manual and quickly transported to the winery in 9-kg boxes. The harvest is stored in a refrigerator until the following morning, in order to be able to perform a moderate pre-fermentation maceration.
Wines from Espectacle Vins
Espectacle is born from a spectacular estate, La Figuera, within D.O. Montsant, and it is owned by the company Espectacle Vins. Only one variety is planted there, the Grenache, from century-old vines planted on steep slopes. The selective harvesting is carried out in boxes, at the optimum time of phenolic ripeness. It is stored in a cold room at 4º for 24 hours. The grapes go through a selection table so that only those bunches that have the best conditions are processed. After destemming, the grapes are selected, berry by berry, on a vibrating selection table, which allows them to discard those berries that are not suitable (raisins, unripe grapes, ...). After a light crushing, the vintage paste is lightly sulphated and pumped into a new vat made of fine grain French oak (Quercus petraea). They carry out several pump-overs and punch-downs in order to achieve the ideal extraction of colour and tannins. The maceration lasts 4 to 5 weeks, depending on the actual conditions of phenolic ripeness of each harvest. The spontaneous malolactic fermentation and the ageing last 14-16 months, in the same oak vat as the alcoholic fermentation. The result is a moderately intense red wine, in which shades of violet can still be seen. Its aroma is deep, complex and very suggestive, seducing with penetrating notes of black currant and very ripe cherries, all surrounded by a subtle nuance of noble woods. Depending on the vintage, which in this wine clearly define its contrasts, its aroma evolves into a whole symphony of floral notes, of roses and orange blossom, nuances of black fruits, and a citrus background. Without being a tannic wine, it has a remarkable concentration based on a high unctuousness, accompanied by a surprising freshness, and especially, of an extraordinary aromatic persistence. A magnificent and surprising wine in which subtlety and elegance dominate its structure.
