Cara Nord is a young winery located in the Sierra de Prades, a mountain located to the south of Catalonia, part of the well-known Cordillera Prelitoral Catalana. The name of the winery refers to the place where their wine are produced: the north face of the Sierra de Prades. Its characteristics and its winemaking tradition and history, inspired this new project. Mountain wines with grapes planted in altitude, enduring difficult climatic conditions.
The dreams of three men, friends and winemakers with great experience in the wine world, established this cellar. Cara Nord was established in 2012 by the will of Tomas Cusiné, Xavier Cepero and Eric Solomon. In love with the majesty of the landscape, it is ideal for winemaking, together with the terroir and winemaking tradition of the area, the founders of the winery did not want to miss the chance to start a new adventure. The vineyards of the winery are surrounded by the National Park of the Prades Mountains and the Poblet Forest. The vines grow at an altitude of above 1,000 metres which helps preserve their distinctive microclimate. The vinification takes place within the historical Monastery of Poblet, an excellent place to enjoy every step of the process. It is a classified area of great geological interest, with the Denomination of Origin, Conca de Barbera, having many years of tradition. The setting for the winery was already prominent, but still promised to be wonderful.
PHILOSOPHY OF WORK
In the Prades Mountains, wines are produced under three different denominations of origin: Priorat, Montsant and Costers del Segre. With the emergence of Cara Nord, there became another: Conca de Barbera. Cara Nord wines are special, unique in character. The winery's vineyards are located at altitudes that reach 1,000 metres. This viticulture, together with its stony soils gives the grapes a thicker skin, with greater aromatic concentration and higher levels of tannins. This type of viticulture, however, also presents difficulties. The climate of the area is difficult, with constant changes of temperature and strong radiation. The terrain is not always fair, some plots are difficult to access and strains on slopes must be well grasped to the ground. The grapes are then faced with harsh conditions, however, these lead to a more aromatic and intense wine. Cara Nord manufactures its products, focusing on their authenticity. These are the desired characteristics during selection. The goal is to develop unique wines, focusing on effort and quality rather than producing a lot of bottles.
THE CARA NORD WINERY Cara Nord produces a white wine and two reds. Cara Nord Blanc is the only white wine. Aged for three months in barrels on its lees, this is a blend of Chardonnay and Macabeo. Cara Nord Negre and Mineral del Montsant are the two red wines by Cara Nord. The first uses Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2013 vintage achieved 91 Parker points. The second is a blend of Carignan and Grenache.
