is a new project by Grupo Orowines
within Denomination of Origin Almansa, east of the province of Albacete, between Valencia, Alicante and Murcia, in the transit area between the plateau and the Mediterranean sea.History of the wineryAtalaya
was created in 2007. Its work cannot be understood without mentioning the main varieties of the area: Garnacha Tintorera (Red Grenache) and Monastrell. Or without studying the evolution of the area of Almansa. Here, a few years ago the grapes that were cultivated were entirely used to produce wine in bulk.
Bodegas Atalaya belongs to Gil Family
, a group of wineries that shares communication and promotion with other wineries. Other wineries in the group are Bodegas Ateca, Bodegas El Nido, Bodegas y Viñedos Shaya, Bodegas Tritón, Cellers Can Blau, Orowines, Lagar Da Condesa and Bodegas Juan Gil.Philosophy of the winery
The wines from Atalaya express the character of the vineyard, provided by the two most emblematic varieties of the area. Bodegas Atalaya
therefore follows the philosophy of the Gil Family Estates
group, which seeks to reflect in its wines the essence of the cultivation areas from the different production regions.
Both its facilities and some of its vineyards are located, at the most, three kilometres north of Almansa
. The lands, which occupy a total of 25 hectares, are mainly comprised of limestone. They are located at an altitude of 700 to 1,000 metres. The winery’s vineyards, mainly old Garnacha Tintorera (Red Grenache)
vines, are distributed between different plots.
The climate of the region is continental and the soils are of low production. Rainfall barely reaches 350 mm per year, which is great to achieve the best quality with low yields. The grapes obtained are of a high quality, and they provide an excellent concentration of colour and aromas to the wines. The technical management of the winery is in the hands of the Australian oenologist, of Spanish origin, Frank Gonzales.
Wines from Bodega Atalaya
At the moment, Bodegas Atalaya only produces red wines. The winery has three unique wines that are very characteristic. The conditions of the winery’s lands, as well as the climate and the care they give the vineyards, could not have another result.Alaya
is born from a vineyard located above sea level, in the surroundings of Almansa. It is 100% made with Garnacha Tintorera (Red Grenache), a variety that is extremely difficult to cultivate and work with. This is not an easy wine to drink. Curiously, since this type of grape is the only one with red must, this wine is completely opaque.
Alaya is joined by another two extraordinary red wines, which are more suitable for the general consumer: Laya
and La Atalaya
. These two wines also add percentages of Monastrell to the final assembly.
