Bodegas Alión, a winery belonging to Vega Sicilia Group, produces a unique wine: Alión. An excellent wine from Ribera del Duero adapted to changing times and it is very attractive. The winery is supported due to its experience and following quality standards, however this wine is a very different concept from the classic wines from this winery.
The history of Bodegas Alión was born in 1986 at the hands of the Álvarez family, owners of the famous winery in the Ribera del Duero Vega Sicilia. The intention was to produce a different wine from those produced by Bodegas Vega Sicilia, with its own personality. For this, they planted the Tempranillo variety in 25 hectares of vineyards in Padilla de Duero, a small town in the municipality of Peñafiel in Ribera del Duero. Peñafiel is famous for its underground cellars, wineries that are located at the foot of a castle from the late fifteenth century, which even today are used for making well known wines like Protos. In 1992 they bought Bodegas Liceo, a modern winery that had all the requirements for the development of the new project: Alión. 3 years later, in 1995, Bodegas Alión put the first Alión vintage on the market. The vintage was full of expectation as it was a new project that had been developing for years from Bodegas Vega Sicilia. It did not disappoint. This first vintage entered the list of the top one hundred wines of the year according to the prestigious North American magazine; Wine Spectator. Supported by the great success it received in 2000, the winery modernised. Furthermore, they restored the wooden deposits for the fermentation.
Philosophy of their work
Bodegas Alión has several plots located in the Ribera del Duero with different compounds of soil sediments from the River Duero. Soils with good drainage that have different materials and nuances that enable the wine to be complex and very expressive. All the grapes used are the Tempranillo variety. The harvest is done by hand, selecting some bunches at their optimum moment. The grapes are transported to the winery in small 12kg crates where there is a second selection. The fermentation takes place in 20,000 litre French oak vats that are restored every 4 years. The fermentation time varies between eight to twenty days depending on the ripeness of the grape. After the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine is stored until January in cold deposits before it is placed in barrels for the aging process. They use French oak barrels made by different cooperages, the wine will be in them for any time between 14 to 20 months. After the aging the wine is bottled. Bodegas Alión pays a lot of attention to this process. The corks are subject to strict quality control performed by a prestigious French laboratory EXCEL. Once it has been bottled, the wine then rests in the bottle for 15 to 16 months before it is released onto the market, polishing the aromas and flavours.
Wines from Bodega Alión Bodega Alión exclusively produces the wine: Alión Reserva. A red wine from Ribera del Duero; excellent, modern and a lot of strength.
