Characteristics of Vizcarra

Izcarra is a red wine from the Ribera del Duero region produced by Bodegas Vizcarra, a winery that was founded in 1991 by Juan Carlos Vizcarra, a wine enthusiast who decided to follow in the footsteps of his father.

The climate in the Ribera del Duero region is Mediterranean yet continental. It is characterized by a low to moderate rainfall, dry summers and long, cold winters, temperatures varying considerably between seasons. This wine is a varietal Tinto Fino (100 %) from vines over 20 years old planted in glass trellises.
With regards to production, it is taken very seriously. The harvest is completed manually in boxes of 15 kg. After selection and stripping, grapes undergo a 17-day fermentation at a temperature of 28ºC. Then malolactic fermentation takes place in American oak barrels. Finally, the wine rests in barrels of American and French oak for 15 months.

Tasting notes Vizcarra

The 2017 vintage rated as "Very Good" has been characterized by being a warm and dry year. Low water reserves at the start became more severe during the months of July and August, when conditions were extremely dry except for some heavy rains towards the beginning of the harvest. Yet without a doubt the defining moment of the year was the frost that affected much of Ribera del Duero on April 28th, immediately following budding, resulting in weak plant mass. This affected plant growth and flowering for the entire year resulting in major production losses. This mishap was followed by some very hot months in June and July. Due to these events the wines of this year are characterized by being wines with more volume and medium acidity. Perfect to drink while young and with a good capacity for aging.
After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
Vizcarra 2015 is a mature red wine with body and structure. An excellent vintage that displays all the character of the variety and a great balance on the palate. Aromas of ripe red fruit, with distinguished spicy notes and toast from the aging. On the palate it is full, silky and balsamic, with a very lingering finish.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
Sight Picota cherry colour with maroon edges and violet reflections. Intense, clean and bright. Abundant tears lightly stain the glass. Nose This new vintage is more fragrant and aromatic. Very ripe black berries stand out, blackcurrents, blackberries and blueberries, along with nice spicy notes and liquorice. Fine toasted notes, earthy notes and slightly mineral hints gradually appear. Elegant. Taste Good, bulky attack. Lots of body and a dense texture, leaving fruity sensations (soaked in alcohol) on the palate. Ripe, polished tannins and a definied, very integrated, refreshing acidity. Long and persistent finish. 100% recommendable.
Sight Intense maroon cherry colour with violet reflections. Clean and bright wine with dense tears that stain the glass. Nose Its juicy notes of ripe fruit take centre stage. The elegant toasted notes are released along with creamy spices and hints of scrubland nicely integrated with the notes of fruit which are not hiden by these aromas. Good balsamic background.
Taste Elegant, smooth and full bodied wine. Very tasty wine, with a silky texture, that coats the mouth with fleshy notes of fruit, soft toasted aromas and milky touches. It has a good acidity and tasty well integrated tannins. Perfectly balanced wine with a very long and persistent, very nice finish that leaves a final fruity sensation.
Sight Intense cherry red colour with touches of scarlet. Medium-high robe. Very bright. Its dense tears stain the glass. Nose Very intense notes of fruit are noticed along with aromas provided by the noble wood on an elegant background of mineral and understory vegetal notes. When swirling the glass, it gains intensity and complexity. Taste A wide and well-bodied wine with a tasty and velvety mid palate. Its expressive notes of fruit are released over the smooth toasted and creamy aromas. Good acidity and integrated tannins. Very balanced. Long and very persistent finish. An elegant wine that leaves good final feelings.
Sight Cherry red with purple trim. Nose Mature fruit character, mineral, accompanied by notes of fine wood. Taste Structured, fleshy, balanced and powerful.

The Vizcarra winery could well be cited as an example of what has been and, to a large extent, still is, Ribera de Duero. A family of winemakers, firmly attached to their roots, who created their own winery looking for a professional future for their children and the best use for their grapes. Using old vineyards and with careful handling in the winery, they produce wines with a great concentration of aromas and great elegance. Wines rooted in Ribera de Duero.
